Hey, Sam has seen this motor and I just wanted to show you guys too and see if you can tell me a bit of the history behind her. It is a 1975 1500 short with louvered cowls and a J block. Looks like a XS with factory trim and no xs lower unit. Got it yesterday and am pretty stoked about it.
Appreciate any info

One of the best lookin' motors Merc ever built in my opinion. All shortshaft 1500's in '75 had J powerheads & louvered cowls, and the XS engines didn't come around until '76, low water pickups and all. It would be the same as the XS except for the stickers and gearcase. In '75 they were usually just referred to as J engines.

Of course it's true. If it wasn't, I wouldn't have said it, and of course all short 1500's from then foward also (XS's beginning in '76).;):D ALSO, I believe that when they made the change to the J powerheads on the shortshaft engines sometime DURING the '74 production year that the louvered cowl change was made at the same time.

THe J block is going on a 14 foot Carlson Contender. Ive been running a 1100 short on it so far. Had a 1250 short mostly ready to go then I found this . So Ill make a few runs with the 1250 and take notes then more than likely swap to the 1500. I think the boat is a 1965. It came with a 1965 900 when I got it.

If you're not careful with it, it might make YOU dance............ or skip......... or skim.;)

Sounds like Mercury wanted to make sure the 150 I6 remained on top of the SJ and FJ classes. Maybe they thought OMC might come out with some shorty, small gearcase V-4 and call it a "production" engine like the XS. Or, maybe Mercury knew that many of the XS motors would end up outrunning OMC race engines. So many what if's. :D

Raceman.
I allready has made me skip once allready. This summer the steering came loose with just my 900 on it. Needless to say I got thrown out at around 50 mph after an uncontrollable chine walk caused by the motor slapping back and forth.
Was not fun.
