It depends on the type of boating you want to be doing and the speeds and power plant you had in mind.
they type of boating will be a huge factor in the size and layup of the boat, along with the power you can budget to use. You dont wana be getting a 21' skater if you can only afford 200hp off the back.
Being this is prob your first performance boat by the way you phrased your question you can go a couple different directions.
-A boat that is goin to be VERY fast with the right power in the future( stv rr, euro....) but equip it with a smaller powerplant so you dont get yourself in too much trouble off the hop.
-A bigger slower boat with big power that will be fun but alot safer, and allow you to keep your power to graduate to a quicker boat when you are ready.
- Or the biggest baddest boat you can afford and try to stay dry.
You get what you pay for, dont expect a fully rigged tunnel for around 6k to be a rocket and last through alot of abuse.

You forgot dangerous
I'm 18 now, and started out in a mirage with a 225 Yamaha. Would only hit about 60 for the first few dozen times then pop let me crank her on up. Get a bunch of seat time. Seat time is ALWAYS good. No matter what anyone says.
I went fro ma Mirage Ski Racer to a XR2002 and boy. What a difference.
When i felt comfortablein the mirage i hit 107 without a problem with the 260 on the back
When i grew the balls in the ally, i hit 98.
I miss the Ski Racer though

Well , let me start this by saying , If You Think an Allison is Scary , You've Got No Buisness being In A 260 Powered Tunnel Hull of Any Type !
You Must Respect The Boat Your Driving , And a Tunnel Hull is Nothing More Then A False Feeling of Security !
Any V Bottom , will talk to you ,and let you know when you are making a mistake .
A Tunnel Hull , will make you feel confident , then bight you in the ass , when you least expect it !
Just Thought From My Time Spent Driving Both Hull Designs !

:iagree: Well said rich. A V hull will FORCE you to take baby steps in your endevour, make you learn how to drive befor getting into trouble.
A tunnel hull it point and shoot. Doesnt require as much experiance to see speeds above that capable of a V. Sure you gotta know how to trim it, but a rookie on a RR with a STOCK 260 will see 100. where as a rookie in a Allison powered the same will be lucky to see mid 80's befor backing out.

Listen to Rich. He's drove both the Allison and tunnels. He was racin boats when I was still a lil tadpole tryin to find an egg.:p
I've drove and owned a Hydrostream, couple tunnels, and now an Allison. Hydrostream took seat time to learn. Bought a mirage after that and ran 105 1st day on water with no seat time. Quickly caught myself and learned the boat more before I started runnin high speeds agian. It was as easy as hit the gas anytime you wanted to go 100+ and that can get ya in a whole lot of trouble. Went to another tunnel, Quartershot T-3. Enjoyed it the same and now I'm in an Allison. I love the Allison by far. No disrespect to the other boats but the Allison is a completly different. It takes a lot of seat time to learn one but once you do ,in my opinion, it is one hell of a ride. To know that all your ridin on is just a few lil inches of boat and a prop. The boat tells you everything its doin. You react to it. The tunnel just goes with no input and a few bumps off the up button can get ya in trouble quick.
For startin out though I'd say any of em with a 2.5 200 would be a great boat. Enough power to learn to drive, learn the boat, and not get ya in a whole lot of trouble with to much power. Motor would be realiable and cheap compared to your nic motor (260,280, drags).
Whatever you decide make sure to take baby steps learnin, always wear a vest, and never go out alone.
Good luck!

i kno, that all hual designs hav the un safe areas, i kno that with tunnel hulls, trim is a huge part of drivin the them, ecspecally triads, i honastly would like to figgure trim first. i probably am goin to big on the motor, but just dreamin. a guy i kno has a stv pro comp i want so bad, that would be nice with 260. of course just the paint is $6000 im shure.
