I have a buddy who is looking at a used 1991 Bass Cat bassboat with a 91 200 merc on the back, I'm assuming that it's a 2.4. The guy says that it's got really low compression on one cylinder, and won't run at any rpm below 2000rpms.
My buddy was asking me what was wrong with it, and I told him it probably needed a new piston w/ rings, and a sleeve in the block. Am I way off?
What would be the best case as far as what's wrong with it? What about worst case?
As far as having a shop do the work...what should he look at paying to repair the motor?
Just looking for a general idea.
Thanks!

Thanks for the info!
So what would be the best case? Broken Ring?
Worst case? Melted piston and screwed up cylinder?
Repair costs...just guessing??

If possible do a leak down test,if all is good and some are not pull that head off, stick lights are great to see in a cyl that is questionable with the head on.

It could be anything from a blown head gasket to a leaned out cylinder to a hidden window...... $40 all the way up to $2500+...........................

don't know about one of the good ones, that engine probably has compression reliefs cut in the exhaust ports

No slots and had 1.5mm rings (thanks rex). Really really close ta tha first PM........other than being a painted bottom guided motor.
