just scored 8 drums of av gas, all drums are still sealed. never opened. the only thing, they are 2,3 years old,, any one know how much one should mix with reg.? the av gas is 101 proof, so i was thinkin, when i was drinkin,, half and half should be safe? the boat nees 91 proof to run, but if i run to high octane, spark bolts and pistons wont like it too much. whatcha all think??

Av gas is made for low rpm motors, it's also meant to run at altitude.

I wouldn't run any fuel that old! It's still going to degrade in quality.

also, avgas has a variety of octanes and mixtures, how do you know what octane it is? far as using it, i'd check for water content in the fuel.

Sealed Avgas will store fine for 2 -3 years, if in doubt compare to some fresh stuff......this is done all the time for Bush pilots and in 3rd world.
The octane will be minimum of 100, known as 100LL. (low lead) which is actually only lower that that of higher octane avgas. It should be fine mixed with 91 octane, unless you get into higher compression. Plenty of racing is done with this stuff straight, it is refined and kept to a higher standard than mogas. Aviation piston engines don't rev as high, developing power at crankshaft speeds that are better suited for propellor efficiency without gear reduction. This fuel is run in turbocharged and supercharged aircraft engines, many older aircraft engines need the lead and has no more limitations on rpm than any other gas.
Run it, or better yet send it to me and I will run it for you for free !!

avgas does not generaly go bad, but unless you need it for HI compression, and your likely not going to gain anything.

thanxs guys for the info, and input, the engine in runnin is sooooo stock except for the heads, that im not lookin for any boost or anything, the drums that i aquired, where stored in a warm warehouse and the seals on the bungs were never broken,, so im thinkin the fuel might have lost a little octane, but when i mix it with some premium fuel it should be fine. in this day and age, scoring 360 gallons of free fuel is like a gift from the gods! rotor rider,, if you were a little closer, id score ya a drum,

Thanks for the sentiment, Show U, I don't think you will have any problems. Dude, if you only knew...I am currently in Delhi, India flying for a charter outfit. I flew in Alaska for GCI for about a year and a half, so can appreciate the fantastic places up there to run. I will be returning to Fla. to run my Daytona pickle fork 19', which is presently being restored in Calif. Whew, I think I may be spread out a little too much !!
Free gas sounds pretty sweet !! That should give you some great hours to enjoy !!! Best of luck and think how envious I am !!!! Gordon.

Thanks, Mike, you never know !! Weather here is mostly hazy, smoggy, just a little cool, right now I am in Bombay, (Mumbai) and going to Bangalore this afternoon.....a real zoo here compared to Alaska. Incredible layers of inefficiency, so everyvbody has jobs.........Gordon. :D

Straight 100 LL is all I run in my engine and I turn it 5 to 6 K on top end. The only thing about running AV gas is that you need to change the engine oil after every 50 hours of running and it is not recomended to use full synthetic motor oils. This is all due to lead contaminating the oil over time. Like they said, if your final compression ratio is lower than 8.5:1 you realy dont need that much octain so blending it with gas would the economical way to go.
Hey Gordon, I am a little envious of all the flying you get to do all over the world. That sounds fun! All of my flying is done here in the flatlands of the southeast but I love it. I take you fly a heli?

Drag'n Fever, that was all good info. for him on Avgas...under severe conditions, changing oil every 25 -30 hours is not a bad idea, and more often as necessary under race conditions....oil is cheaper than engines !!
Looks like we will eventually get to meet and do some runnin', whenever I get back to the States....your boat is over the top !!
I have been flying charter jets in India for about a year and a half, mostly Citation XL/XLS, including trips to Pakistan and Nepal. Many tales to tell, I flew Julia Roberts and her family to Taj Mahal and other places...also Jerome Jackson, whose is really a nice guy. Since you asked.....
I have been really fortunate have a varied flying career, including almost 10 years cropdusting, seaplane flying and instructing, sailplanes, experimental aircraft, aerobatic instruction, and lots of Corporate experience in the U S and Europe and Africa, and now India.
I spent about a year and a half doing Coca (cocaine) eradication and other things in Columbia flying OV-10D Bronco's....I led missions of up to 4 Broncos (not common) and 2 Hueys, doing jungle treetop flying at 200+ knots, spraying weed killer on Coca fields...the local farmers did not appreciate our visits, and they practiced their AK-47 skills on us. We would take hits pretty regular, planes had lots of armour plate, but there were gaps.....a loud "whack!!" followed by the round bouncing around in the plane always generated some interest !!
Most of my flying has been much more sedate....I am still alive !!
I like choppers, but have stayed with fixed-wing. I have done R/C aircraft, including choppers, hence the name.....
I flew a lot in Fla. and the southeast, including up in the panhandle of Fla.
loved the Suwannee river and Itchetucknee spring and river, and for sure all the springs...thats another story, oh well. Sure some great seafood on the Gulf.!!!
Thanks for letting me B.S. I have a flight to Mumbai (Bombay) overnite tomorrow, Get up at 3:45ayem, not my best time !!! Mercenary times.....
Love the USA !!!

Show U,
Boy, that would make my day !! I just got back to Delhi, from flying to Lahore, Pakistan for a coupla days......
I spent quite a few seasons as an instructor on both Floatplanes, mostly cessnas, citabrias, and pipers. cubs, super cubs, etc. also mutiengine on UC-1 Twinbee flying boat type.
All are just too much fun.
I gotta say flying and fishing in AK has got to be one of the ultimate things, and jetboating up there would also be a blast.
When I finally get outta this place, we plan on getting up to Anchorage to visit family, now you got me thinking a few days would be impossible to refuse.!! Thanks for the idea and kind offer, yer killin me !!
My Email is Gornan@ aol.com , to save thread from unrelated BS.
If you get a chance, post some pictures of your boat !!
Take care, Gordon :D

I run AV gas in my 7,000 rpm race motors at sea level ... no problems. Merc even spec'ed it for some of their race motors years ago. One of the specs on it is that it is to have no degrade if stored sealed for 24 months. Those that say it will not work in race motors are making uneducated guesses.
I would not hesitate to use free gas from sealed containers of AV gas. There may be some drawback to using it in low compression motors if you are racing, but for pleasure use, you will not notice any difference.

I run av gas in my 496 34 deg total advance at 12 to 1 no problems yet.
Send me a drum I'll test it for you and return the drum.

Hey Mark and Wild Hair, that is all good and accurate info. Long idle periods or low compression might result in lead fouling of spark plugs, just like in aircraft engines, but probably not a factor in motors running reasonably hard.
Wild Hair, you dog.....I already made the kind and generous offer to dispose of this evil fuel properly by running it through my boat !!! Maybe we can keep the pressure on him and share !!! lol.
Run hard, live free- Gordon.

Two problems. 1 It's tooooooooooo cold up there for this Okie, even in july.
2 I could buy 4 drums of fuel for what it would cost me to drag my boat up there.
Now, If you want to load it up and bring it to Oklahoma we could use my boat to test it. We live on the lake so we dont have far to go. I'll buy the beer, and you dont have to worry about getting cold.:thumbsup:
Hell we can get RotorRider to fly in and just make a week of it. We can test fuel all day then party on the deck boat after dark, and you can bring your ol hydes with you. Now dont that sound like a better idea.

that, in all reality,, does sound like a better idea! only because its -33c rite now, and since you live on a lake, and have a deck boat,,ha,ha,,,,but if i leave in june, i mite make it there by july,,,, but i insist!!!! RotorRider buys the beer,,,lol!,, you up for that gordon??

I have sure had worse offers !!! Don't know if my stupid schedule will allow it, but buying the beer is sure not a problem, of course, I have never seen you guys, drink, either !! What if Obama buys with stimulus money?? Sure sounds good to me, I know right now AK is not outdoor friendly for boats !!! July is another matter though.
Keep these good ideas coming !!! Florida is nice now, but too dang hot in July.......G.

well if your buyin the american beer, we better use the stimulis $$,lol, and ya the weather here is not tooo boat friendly! but as for florida in july??? that might take me a few months to climatize,, how much room ya got at yur place? i can pay for the steaks, or i can bring some fresh moose, yummmm!

ha,ha, roger that!,well we did, have a moose strapped in the jet this year, only thing is, he werent livin, went with a buddy down "no tell river", 6 hrs from the house, bagged a moose on the first day out, took 2 weeks off for huntin, so sat around, had a couple coktails did some fishin, and toatly relaxed! saw no one for 5 days!!!but,,,, we took 6 13 gallon drums of fuel down with us, used 2 and had to leave the others down river. Next weekend took buddy #2 down to get the fuel,, loaded the fuel, got on step,, "POW", nocked down second moose.. unloaded fuel,, brought moose back home, put fuel stabalizer in fuel before we left, and fuel still down river, lol, lol, back down river next spring to get fuel,,again,, i seem to have a fuel issue????:D
