If I have a 2.5 fatshaft propshaft from a sportmaster gearcase, can I turn it down and re-spline it to replace a small shaft? or are there more differences itn the two shafts? I'm looking at pictures, and they look the same. Are these things hard chromed? and if they are, when I turn it down, should I re heat-treat, chrome, and grind?
Thanks for the info in advance!

They are the same other than the prop area... Would be alot simpler to offer it in trade to someone with a good small shaft version... Heck you might even get a little "boot" money or have them pay shipping for both...
In other words the "fat shaft" is worth more...

The small shaft will leave your prop and it on the bottom.

Or...you could simply use/install the 1 1/4" shaft, and just buy a 1 1/4" Merc prop hub insert?

i would swap with someone.. i run both. it sucks if you have a great prop, and can only run it on one lower unit.

Thanks for the info. I've been looking for a small shaft, and they are kind of hard to find. I was playing with the idea of making my own. I think I could make one from a special steel we use at work to make one. It's harder and stronger than other steels, it is more shock resistant, tougher, and has a lot of nickle which makes it corrosion resistant. I can case harden it and hard chrome the wear surfaces. I think it would withstand more abuse than the stock shafts. (I think they are made from 4340) I was just wondering if anyone else has played around with making their own.
