The split sleeves with the compression band... easy as pie. Bought them off the merc truck years ago. Other than that the cheapy band one with the little red handle and screw adjuster at the auto parts store

I've got an ancient well cared for kd set that I love. it's the one with different sized split sleeves and a set of locking pliers. I HATE the wind up types....
scroll down on this link and you'll see it.

Yup anything but the wind up band style POS craftsman one I have. I swear it's the last time every time I use it - I hate that thing.

Used the wind up types... They suck! I was wanting a clamp type.
Thanks :)

KD . Good grief 85 clams, glad I bought them 30+ years ago. Shouldn't complain, they still work.

if you're not needing the full set of compressors, at least they give you the option of just buying the pliers and one compressor....saves a few bucks...

I've used a modified top of a steel sleeve of the correct finished size about 1 1/2" long and taper the leading edge about 1/2" on the lathe ( Same one for 14 years ) . Has worked like a champ...

I have both the snap-on plier type & also a tapered tube type. Both types work excellent, only thing with the tube is that you need an extra tube for every bore size, it is my favourite to use though!!

I have a full set of the OMC Sleeve type compressors. The odd-ball sizes that that kit did not have I made on a lathe like Jay has.....

I use to do that, but the last motor I built, I said, "This is the last time." Plus I don't want to risk screwing up a ring.

Paul, the split style ring compressor's are the only way to go, except for the one I bought from Mercury a few years ago that is a solid one made specifically for each bore size. I bought it for 2.5's. You haven't made that progression yet or I would send you one.:D

Another way that I heard that worked from a friend that passed away at an early age is to take a spring type clothes pin. Take it apart and use the 2 skiny ends of the halves to push in on the rings instead of using finger nails. It does work.
