and want to get away from the real ass kickin up n commin mindset, Macon Ga. would probably fill the bill. summer time with the nearest large body of water a day's drive away and 98% humidity and 98 degrees is simply devine. and not to mention that nice red clay that gets under your toenails when wadin down at the swimmin hole :D:iagree::cheers: just ask "Race Man" ;) ps, for the right amount of money I can put up with alot, they got a titty bar with truck parking!

I've lived in Macon for my whole life. Born here, public schools here, raised kids.
Tobesofkee is about 2500 acres and is a fun little lake, but EXTREMELY crowded on weekends. Completely surrounded now by up-scale housing and with it came less tolerance for high perf stuff. Sinclair is half hour to an hour away (depending on from which side of Macon, and what part of Sinclair) and is a little over 10X larger, not counting river, which is approx 15 or 20 miles to damn, and fairly uncongested and very navigable. Rest of lake can be pretty busy on weekends also. High perf stuff is fairly spotty. Oconee is another 30 mins or so to N.E. and is a little larger still. Another nice lake that can get busy on weekends and not much high perf stuff there either.
As far as living in Macon, it sux. Demographics of inside city limits are over 60% non caucasian, and still trying to recover from 8 years of EXTREMELY militant and incompetent black mayor who saw everything as a racial issue, and apparently had his hip pocket wide open in the process. (term limits or he'd still be in office) Constant bickering with Mayor and city council, several of whom are equally militant and incompetent. Forbes Mag. recently reported on worst places to live in US, and Macon was number 7 on the list that was based on something like percentage of population at or below poverty line and overall economics. Poverty level high, crime rate high, property taxes keep on going, and public schools a disaster. (my opinion)
Lots of job loss in the last 6 or 8 years, and very little in the way of replacement. Brown and Williamson Tobacco pulled the plug and left town several years ago taking thousands of jobs. Several other major industries have left. Nothing comes in to replace it. Kumo Tires was poised to put a tire manufacturing facility here and made the big official announcement and even erected billboards, but pulled the plug in the last several months. I guess they did their homework. The public schools there are EXCELLENT. (Macon has 6 or 7 privates and ALL people who can afford it go private). Macon has it's second black mayor now (actually a white guy/lawyer, ex state represenative) who doesn't have a clue. First thing he did on inauguation night was appologize for slavery and make other comments that further fragmented the population.
Cross the line into Houston County on the south side and it's like going into a new country. Robins Air Force Base and all of it's collateral vendors help cement a robust economy and there are NO private schools. There have been generations of competent, cooperative governement there and the city departments like inspections and fees (guys who issue business liscenses, building permits, etc) actually PROMOTE and SOLICIT new business instead of having a bunch of egomanical people with attitude that make any relocation, aquisition or business expansion a living hell with hurdles and fees. Houston County's Administration (although presently reorganizing after the sudden death of a multi term mayor who was EXCELLENT) has apparently for years been composed of people who genuinely cared for the good and growth of the local economy, rather than trying to see what they could control personally or benefit personally from.
If you come here I'd be looking at the Houston County area as far as residence. (Warner Robins & Perry Ga.)

Macon is one of the most depressing towns in the state. For awhile I worked out of macon and drove back to columbus 90 miles west every night. You would have to double my salary to get me to move there.

WILDGLIDE55,I live about 30 miles south of Macon and I concur with Raceman and Michael M . If your a bass fisherman there are lot's of good one's here. IF you like to just cruise in your boat and enjoy the day with your family then it will probably be to crowded for your likeing, without traveling a greater distance. Don't know what you do for a liveing but I am into residential construction, and for a little over 2 years now my work has been piss poor at best.A lot of competion with a lot less contractor's still in business. I was haulin the bandit to the worlds in the keys and the top gear quit in the truck on 75. I got off at the next exit and found a phone book. It showed an Amco shop in Macon only a couple miles down the road, so I called the number and it rang to the owners house at 2a.m. . told him my problem and he said to pull into his shop and they would do the trani. first thing in the morning about 5:30 [fantastic] . Well I nurse the rig down the road, find the shop and park right across the front of the shop. Being from Can. and not too comfortable about sleeping in the truck in a strange place [I had an idea about Macon] . I decided to climb up in the boat and sleep there figurin if the boat rocked it would wake me and at least I'd have the high ground advantage. Well I made it through the night, only to be awakened by a voice at first light. I look over the side of the boat to see two Black guys that had been sleeping in the front door of the shop.Well i guess one guy woke up to see this huge red wall in front of him and couldn't figure what it was. The conversation goes Like this: Wake up Leroy; WTF is that, I done know man i done think it was there last night. All i cans sees is red. well let's get some wine and fries and get F^@ked up. SO I KNOW THERES A MAC D'S AND LIQUOR IN MACON.

I live just ouside Atlanta, but my wife is from Macon so I make a visit on frequent occasions. I agree with the discriptions of the town and economy. i will add this. If you drive ten minutes from downtown in any direction you are in rural GA. If living away from the hustle and bustle of town is your thing then Macon isn't a bad place. Also, if your a deer hunter you will love the place; everytime we go down there thats all the local guys talk about. That or catching giant catfish on the rivers close to there.
