Wow, I've actually been on that very boat!

Let's also realize that this could (and does) happen to any outboard if you beat it hard enough in rough water. Not saying this is what happened here, but this would not have happened from casual cruising.

That's not the first Verado I've seen with a broken clamp bracket.
Maybe the shrimp is just trying to return to the bottom of the ocean:eek::D:thumbsup:

The clamp bracket did not break......... and it happened at 40 MPH in calm waters..... we hauled it out and supported the motor until the guys from Midnight came to take it away...... The motor was ok,,,,, no water ingestion, infact there was no visible damage. It did damage the motor next to it with it's prop... took a chunck out of the cav plate.
The motor was through bolted to a plate to get it higher and the plate had studs welded to it to attach it to the transom. there were no through bolts directly holding the motor onto the transom. The studs sheared right at the plate and the motor was left dangling off one remaining stud and the tie-bar.

Must have had the better welder work on the port side???? Geeesh... I think I saw this done on a Skater once...

Hey, I'm no Merc hater. I am a Merc dealer too and I run them on all my Allisons. I hope Merc comes out with something great, but I don't think you will find many to call the Verado a great success.

That particular application is no different than a Allison/STV/Mirage with a drag motor: sh*t is going to break no matter what engine brand is hanging on the back.:)

I'd like to see a close up pic of that plate deal .

I remember calling on a similar style boat builder when Midnight Express had just started rigging quads on their boats.
Told the builder I thought that was cool. He bust's out laughing (used to work for them) and said they did that because they're such pigs that they wouldn't run with triples!
Said his boat of identical size would smoke one with 1 less motor:cool:

If Tom build the plate it may have held on I mean I proably only had 575 lbs of dead weight on it turning 7600 rpms pushing 14,700 lbs boat with 1675 lps of thrust at the prop equates to around 1,776 pound per sq. inch at the given fastning point

it probably would smoke one wit less motor but wouldnt be able to follow one through real "chit" with out coming apart first:nonod:

Big wave dave (MCracing) used to build midnight express and he told me yes they are heavy but the boats are built to be bullet proof. The boats will take more of a beating then your body can handle, seriously, think about it. Or just go ask his son who he used to make test the boats needless to say he was crippled after the "test" they dont call him big wave dave for nothing:thumbsup:

i guess that boats a midn-ight-expr now:D

my cousin cracked 2 trim/transom brackets on the 38 fountain he fishes tournaments with. I never saw them or the extent of the crack but the merc reps at the biloxi (sp?) tournament told him they had never seen them crack. when i first saw this pic i figured they cracked, guess not.

I don't think you will find many to call the Verado a great success.

Maybe not, but the ones that do call them a success are all of their owners, which are the only ones who matter. Everyone else is just a hater, yamaha sack rider, or a crybaby pissed at merc for making a 4s. I'm sure I come off like a dick, but honestly I'm tired of listening to their BS. "Wahh wahhh, merc made a big bad 4 stroke, they are complicated, they are heavy boo hoo, I might need to actually learn something instead of sitting on my ass and getting paid to work on the same old motors"

those stainless marine gorilla jacks seem strong, mine was great. Those plates use studs did the stud broke out of the plate they had on the transom or did the studs coming out of the jackplate break?

There were no jack plates on this boat. three of the motors were bolted directly to the transom, the two outer motors were bolted to a 1/2" plate that had 1/2" S/S studs welded to the plate. The studs went through the transom and had washers and nuts securing it. There was no actual through bolts holding the plates that held the two outer motors on. They were relying on the the weld attachment at the plate. Any good welder will tell you the pitfalls of a hot weld.......................

I have tripple 300 Verados on a 38 fountain with over 1000 hrs. Fishing kingfish tournys I have launched it 6 ft in the air too many times to count.... I have popped a couple of gearcases but otherwise no big probs.

While fishing these tournys I have seen a couple of v8 yamis come off the clamp bracket. I have also seen many E tecs busted as well. They are all good motors, but if you beat on them, they all will break.

I like the Verados... It just took me a while to understand how they work. Also, with the exception of rebuilding a powerhead, they are pretty easy to work on.

BTW. It seems that most people who pick on the Verados are the same people who still think its a V6.... They just dont understand them!!!!!!!!!

So they must have changed the rigging from the Maimi Boat show (where the above pics came from)

As much as I dislike the thought of 4 stroke heavy outboards I must say the Verado's are very impressive performance wise and have certinaly proved themselves on the offshore fishing rigs. My hat's off to Yamaha if they even come close to the performance and durability the Verado's have shown.

If you had been watching, you would have known that Yamaha has been pushing the hp envelope since the 220 Special back in 1984. ;)

congrats, its still 100+hp short.

The SHO tops out at 300 hp and (Yamaha´s own) test results show that it way outperforms the 300 hp Verado. It is 100+ pounds short of the 300 hp Verado, though.

If you are into heavy 350 hp monsters, there is a V8 for that.

I am at the launch ramp often and see a lot of boats starting up and running out for the day... See lots of yammahahahas goin back on the trailer and back to the service dept. People cussin them and leaving mad as hell...Some wont start at all and some wont go faster than the engine guard will let em....Mercs are more reliable.... Have happier owners too... BTW, have you been watching the history channel's WWII in hd?? After seeing that, who could support such a heinous country as japan??

Real impressive feat. Maybe with another 10 years of 6 weekend long seasons, and you'll have the same run time as I do in 1 year.

My boat runs great, the little old 2.0L 85' XR2 starts day in day out, and still turns 6100 anytime I put my foot to the floor. Decals are a little faded from all the time it spends in the sun though.

Wait till you see Yamaha's new line-up of engines for 2010. You will be very impressed with their new lightweight 4-stroke larger engines. They are dropping quite a few large motors, and replacing them with all-new technology based powerheads. The 350 V-8 is going the way of the do-do bird.

If yamas are so great then how come I see mostly mercury power on the back of most of the center consoles? Also all of the go fast boats?in florida.Just wait until you have to rebuild those yamas, goood luck getting them apart after the fastners break off even if you use heat on them, the strength off the fastners are made of silly putty,oh I forgot, their throw aways just like the other china/jap junk made.Try not to run them in saltwater. At least mercs and omc I can usually get the nuts or bolts out ,using a little heat without everyone twisting off.

11-22-2009, 09:01 PM
you've got a hell of a point on the fasteners.......especially exhaust plate and water jacket bolts on an old saltwater motor...
