View Full Version : Mercury Tech 1998 PROMAX Gauge Question
Should be an easy question for a Merc mechanic.
Does a 1998 300 ProMax have a stock trim sensor for a trim gauge somewhere on mid? The engine has a 20" mid with trim pump in the boat. I have looked all over, but can't find sensor. I looked on the Bam Merc. part drawings and found a sensor on a dwg for a 300 promax that had integrated trim.
Do you have to use a stainless marine no slack cable indicator?
Thanks

Mercury Racing recommends use of a mechanical trim gauge (a stainless cable must be run from the motor to the dashboard where it moves a slide on a vertical gauge or actuates a popup). But they are expensive.
There is no way to fit a Mercury electronic trim sender like those used on most Mercs. But I use a standard OMC sender (about $60 with the longer L-shaped arm), and I machined a simple bracket to fasten it to the inside of the motor bracket (just above the pin holes) so that the end of the arm rests against center of the trim ram and moves through about a 3" range as the ram angle changes when the piston extends or retracts. The sender will work just fine with an OMC or Merc gauge, and will run through about half the full gauge travel between full up and full down.
I've used this setup for two years now with no problem. It's a whole lot cheaper than buying a mechanical popup gauge, and requires a whole lot less space on the dashboard.

It's on the port side mid way on the swivel bracket. Merc# 821180A6. It's a round black disc 1 1/2" in diameter with two wires held on with two screws.
For racing applications (as previousely mentioned) a mechanical guage and cable is the way to go.

On 300s that have the heavy duty setup with the trim pump in the boat (not integral), there is no sensor. I verified with Merc. today
Oh well, there goes another $600 for the stainless marine heads- up setup
