I don't know much about F1 but I want to go to a race soon (within the next year or so?) Anyone have any suggestions?

Looking forward to the USF1 team that's suppose to come out next year. http://www.usgpe.com -- Now if we could just get a track in the US. Rumors are that the Vegas track will get a race if they re-do the garages. I know the F1 folks and the Indy folks don't get along anymore so that track is out.

Anyway, my goal is to learn more about F1 and attend a race.

F1 is the most amazing specticle in the world. The cars are loud of course but what makes it unreal is the speed that the cars are actually going and the speed they carry through the corners. TV gives you no concept of how fast there really going, it's unbelievable. It's not cheap especially if you want to buy some stuff.
My next goal is to see a Moto GP race which should happen in 2010.

What F1 race(s) have you gone to?

I've been to the Indy 500 a few times. Done plenty of IRL, NASCAR and NHRA races. I really want to see the F1's so I can see how they compare to the Indy cars. I'm assuming it'll be like watching a NASCAR race vs. an IRL race --- the Indy cars make it look like you can run faster than a NASCAR.

I feel like a redneck watching NASCAR. They're annoyingly loud an slow. Don't get me wrong, I am a redneck so I do enjoy it  but I'd like to get into some SERIOUS racing. Thing is that NASCAR has the TV time slots to make it a good spectator sport. Just about every Sunday you can bet there's a race (2:30 EST today by the way, only 2 races left in the chase)

I heard that the marketing guy who made NASCAR what it has become in the last few years was just hired by IRL to give them some fans. One can only hope...

F1 and Indy are both open wheel, but the F1 is a WAY more expensive vehicle. Indy cars you basically buy off the shelf, F1 cars you have to hire a staff of engineers to build you one from scratch. An Indy car costs something like $10 million to race a season - an F1 car costs about a $500 million a year to race (give or take a couple bucks - ha)

A few years ago a couple of friends of mine went to a F1 race in Toronto, they told me the cars were awesome and the speeds were something to see in person.

On the other hand it was so expensive that it really wasn't worth it, once your in and at your seat, the view of the track is so limited you would be lucky to see anything other than a blur flying by from time to time.

Most of them said they were glad they went but enjoyed the racing better watching it in HD at home where you get a cockpit view and see the whole track from the drivers perspective. Not to mention the pit action can only be seen at home anyway.

I think Nascar/IRL has a better format for fan observation with an oval track, at least you can see the whole track and the pits from most seats.

What was expensive? The seats? Or the whole trip out to Canada, etc? --- er, wait, you're in Canada...

Don't know if you've been to the Indy 500 or the Brickyard 400, but you can't see the whole track from any of the seats at that track either.

I was yearly at the Gilles Villnueve circuit in Montreal. I attended from the Senna days straight through the Shumi days. I've seen both Indy/Irl and have to say there is no comparison with Formula 1. When Shumacher retired he took the action with him.

Never been to an F1 race but have been to Nascar@ Texas and Martinsville, IMSA GP of N.O., SCCA runoffs@ Road Atlanta, NHRA in Baton Rouge and Baytown many times since 1982 and a bunch of different kinds of amature races.
Road races are best on TV but I'd go at least once to any kind of racing.
F1 cars pull 4G in some coners. That's a lot a G's!

Here's a bio on USF1 co-owner Ken Anderson. http://www.grandprix.com/gpe/cref-andken.html
Here is some good info on F1, http://www.formula1.com/inside_f1/understanding_the_sport/
One of the websites I visit on F1 is http://en.f1-live.com/f1/en/index.shtml

The race in Montreal is a good time. Spa is on the ticket for me next year. TV does F1 no justice at all. They are absolutely unreal in person.

HD the closest one to you is in Montreal 11-13 June. I haven't been but I've heard it's a very nice facility.

I don't think there has ever been an F1 race in Toronto - those were CART races.

EDIT Cap'n beat me to it!

Sorry it was Montreal where they went, the tickets were expensive as expected. I remember them saying that unless you just sat at your seat there were extra ticket charges for going through the pits and other race attractions.

They said if they were going to do it again they would rent a hotel room with an overview of the track even though they were outrageuously priced, the view would have been better and they could have watched the race on TV to catch the crashes etc not to mention drink bevy's from their own cooler instead of having to purchase the overpriced track offerings.

I believe that they did the calculation and with a room rental and four guests it would work out to be the same price as getting tickets and being at the track and of course the more you drink and eat the cheaper that scenario works out to. They also mentioned all the good looking girls were at the hotels anyway and inviting them over for the race to watch from a balcony would have been a much better setup.

Racers...always looking for the best setup.:D

I looked at the schedule and was thinking Brazil next November --
http://www.formula1.com/races/calendar_preview.html

Montreal is in June, I'll be boating :D

I get what you guys are saying about the cars being a blur and you can't see everything as well as you can on TV, but that's any race I've been to really. If you've been to a lot of races, you know it's more than just the race - the people, events, etc. around the race are just as important as the race itself.

I just want to see these cars in action

I've been to a race. I mostly like it for how crazy fast they are, there is nothing else in motorsports like it.

A single F1 car idling down pit lane is louder that all of the NASCAR field at speed. You NEED earplugs.

F1 cars accelerate faster than gravity through 180 MPH, At Indy they come out of the infield in Indy turn 2 and get going faster than an indy car before slamming on the brakes at 5G and slowing from 240-90 in 100'.

They are the most advanced vehicles on the planet, the car you see racing today is obsolete as the improvements are being tested and fielded constantly.

You have an advantage going to a North American race as there is no real large fan base here. A few years ago at Indy Brazilians were explaining that it was cheaper for them to see the race here than at home due to ticket price. If you have the chance go see it, its a hell of a show. Bring earplugs.

No reason to watch Nascar when you have this legend out on the tracks.

Thats great and F1 is best racing ever anyone can do overtake at turning only. For that he needs mind, or else overtake is not possible through only accelerate power. That video shows that..
