Man, I haven't drooled this much since I finished the assembly on my RC10GT
I really want to get back into this stuff, and I really got stoked about the vintage Trans Am races for on-road cars. That stuff is soooo cool.
Years ago, I met Ruffy Rios at an off-road track in Orlando and after I won all of the heat races and the main, he gave me a graphite composite RC10 chassis, a Team associated buggy body and complimented my driving skills. It killed me when I had to sell all of my RC stuff to pay bills and that graphite chassis and Team Associated body was part of the sale. I haven't had an RC car since then.
I have fond memories of racing my RC10 at Lake Whipporwill's 1/10th scale Daytona. It was about the time the RC10L came out and was the be all/end all for oval racing.
I dug through some current RC message boards and the days of the Green Can motor and Tekin speed controller w/o reverse are long gone. Remember when ball bearing differentials were a big deal?

The RC10 is really one of the standout cars in RC. It's kind of a legendary car, from what I undersant. I've never actually been into RC, but I like to mess around with them sometimes. My dog loves 'em - he likes chasing them around, so that's why I started buying some cars lately. He just can't get enough of them.

I think that's a great idea. I'm trying to work with HPI on setting up a giveaway for one of these this winter. I really got this one so I could check it out and possibly evaluate it for a giveaway. Oh, and to have fun with too.

Ha, yes there is. I just wanted to shoot pics before it got dirty. Once I put gas in it, the truck will have to stay in the garage. It runs on high octane gasoline (minimum 91) mixed at a 25:1 ratio. Sounds good for Alisyn oil to me!
This video shows one in action, sort of.

Man, I haven't drooled this much since I finished the assembly on my RC10GT
that was my favorite truck. We'd get up high in the air and run them on topend. I bought my rc10 factory team gt when they first came out, with the carbon fiber components. I put a Trinity Picco15 in it. mota would make 1.3 hp and spin to 42,000 RPM. I went from like a 13-15 tooth clutch bell to I believe a 22 tooth clutch bell, and dropped like 10 teeth on the spur gear. Believe it or not, the little truck still had so much bottom end with the SUPER TALL gear setup that I couldn't WOT until around 20-25mph. with the standard gearing it would never get traction under acceleration. with the tall gearing it had just enoug grunt to make traction and keep the front end up. we had street tires and offroad tires, and the offroad tires made more MPH becuase they would get skinny and tall like a dragster does on the other end of the track. we ran it along side the truck one day and it run off from us at 70 like a vette and a bus. I'd guess the little truck had to do at least 85-90. It ran alot better on the big end without the windsheild cut out for air. I'd only cut out the passenger side of the front windsheild and it would start to track right. we put another body on without the windsheild cut, just the head sticking out the bed of the truck, and it woud run straight, and accelerate harder from midrange to topend.
Man now I miss running these things too. I'm glad I kept em. now I can have something to do with my son to keep his lil Arse outta trouble:thumbsup::cheers:

Most guys with these new cars will never experience a 1/10 scale 6 cell pan car modified race on the carpet. 70mph in a 50' straight, unlimited traction, and if you didn't know how to control your trigger finger, the pack would dump 20 seconds before the race was over and the rest of the field would put 2 more laps in on you.

Actually, it really is easily large enough to sit on it and ride it. No joke. It's just a little bit smaller than those Power Wheels ride on vehicles for kids. No photo can accurately depict its size for some reason.
Stock, they run about 45 mph. That's pretty fast when you consider its mass and size. Of course, a brushless 1/10 truck on lipo power is faster than this, but the Bajas can be easily modded to run 80 mph. Not sure why you would want to though since it's really meant for offroad running, not street runs. Stock power is a CY 26CC two-stroke chrome-bore gas engine, which is a good clone of a Zenoah. Any Zenoah engine will drop into this truck with no modification.
Here's a photo of my 1/10 Traxxas Rustler next to the Baja. The Rustler is actually large for a 1/10 car too.

It would surely inflict serious harm or death, for real. There's even an explicit warning in the manual about that. The radio system does include a failsafe though.
Forkin' Crazy
11-17-2009, 10:34 AM
Just make sure that when you turn the radio off, the throttle goes to idle. Yours may have already been set up that way. I guess the radio is 2.4 gig? When I bind my TX to the RX, I set all the inputs to where I want them incase of a TX to RX failure. ie, you can hold the throttle wide open, turn it to the right, turn off the TX, and the throttle returns to idle and the steering straightens.
As far as RX problems or battery problems, they make a voltage tester that will put a load on the battery. It is nice to KNOW what condition your battery is in, whether fress off the charger or not. I also make sure my RX is very secure and insulated, and the critical plugs, are plugged in well and secure. For extensions and battery connections, I use heat shrink tubing or use a store bought system with a plastic frame secured by zip ties.
Yours is RTR, so most of this is probably done, but it won't hurt to check.

yep, any rtr that I have seen is already setup. Except the old GTs that would break the zipties that held the battery in when you wheelied it on the pavement. Throttle return springs = awesome. :D
"bind" the tx to rx, man that is freakin great. Spektrum is a much better than a removable crystal that would get knocked loose or broke if you tagged a wall hard enough.

Yes, the Rustler is brushless. The S&F cars we're giving away are brushless also, and the speed controllers are programmable and you can use a computer to do it as well. I'm not sure about the programability of the Vileneon controller in my Rustler.
When I get the Baja going, I'll post some videos for sure :)

How can you call it RC racing if you've never:
"Trained" battery packs to go balls out for 4 minutes and crash like they just came off of an 8-ball high.
Soldered rows of 1156 light bulbs in a circuit to drain packs.
Mixed shock oils for your own "secret sauce" (as if it actually made a difference)
Burnt your fingers on a speed controller heat sink.
Actually put the mechanical speed controller (original RC10) back in when your Tekin or Novak speed controller bit the dust.
Know that "green motor" racing has nothing to do with the environment.
Know that a 9 turn triple isn't something that Brian Boitano would do.
Nitro racing? Yeah, it was easy to tell who the Nitro guys were. They were the one's in the hobby store buying the same parts they bought last weekend. :) :)
Good times.

holy crap I just had flashbacks.
How bout simple green buckets with brushes to clean rubber tires between rounds.
soldering in all the batterys to eliminate the .001 ohm resistance that a connector created, lol.
Soldering a shorted lead on a discharged pack, or deans plugs with just a resistor on them to keep the battery dead between race weekends.
1400SCRs were the baddest MFs on the block.
you just spent 200 bucks on 1400SCRs and the 1800SCRs were released, you were then instantly obsolete. :o
Getting a NovaRossi .12 from an on road guy, modding the crank, header, and clutch setup to fit in your rc10gt so you could beat every ones ass at the offroad track like they were all running half throttle. :D
64 pitch gears and graphite axles.
3 piece pistons in offroad shocks to change compression and rebound.
Flat can stock motors, then removable endbells signaled the end of RC as we know it.
Man those were some great times.

We took apart cordless drills for the johnson motors and put them in our RC10's for the fastest street cars there was.
The old mechanical speed controls SUCKED i dont even know how we ever used those things and thought they was something. My RC10 ran it first for awhile till i could afford an ESC. I dont know how many times i burnt my fingers. I couldn't count how many different sets of tires I had and went through.
One night we had an ice storm and shorted the power to our house and my charger caught on fire and most of everything in my closet which was converted RC shop had perished cept for the car itself. That was the end of my RC10 days, about 10 years ago id say. Kinda sad which is why my eyes are lighting up real big since this new hpi baja 5t came around. Im really thinking about getting me one for christmas.

YES! I actually had FUTABA brand truck that I put one of those johnsen drill motors in. I couldnt get an ESC until the next week, so I took the servo out of my boat and made it swing around and put the 2 battery leads together, POW! With a spark and smell of burning wires, the truck was flying down the road. :D It eventually melted the solder together so I had no on/off throttle, flipped the truck trying to get it back to me and blew the tires off the wheels. lmao.

HeHe...u guys are takin me back to when I was 12yrs old again...I think the first real stadium trucks were actually conversion kits they made for the RC-10 and the Losi JRX2. I saved all my lawn money up to buy the JRX2 when it was released. I remember it was the only off the shelf buggy you could get with a graphite chassis and 32pitch gearing. I came with no electronics either. Associated then released a version of the RC-10 with a graphite chassis. Losi and Associated started offering stadium truck versions of those 2 popular buggies. That was about the time I shelved my RC cars and went back to boats.
I remember taking an 18in long off the shelf rc boat i had and gutting the hardware and electronics and installing a gaupner 700motor and gearbox and my Novak esc...that little sucker would roll over on its side from the prop torque like those crackerbox racers do.

Yup, the RC10T. Same aluminum tub or graphite "oreo" slab. Different front suspension setup from the tree to the control arms. Out back the arms and dogbones were longer but I think it might have used the same tree. The Stealth transmission was the same between the truck and buggy.
Oh man, Matched cells, and pushed cells All this talk makes me want to get back into it, but as much as it's changed, I'd be totally lost. They'd probably laugh if I showed up at a track with an old gold tub buggy rollin' on HPI's.

Steve, that's really cool. What does it have for power? When I ever get back to NY maybe I should bring the Baja with me. :D
This was one of my first RC cars - I got this one when I was like 13. I remember saving money for a long time to get it. I still remember it was $179.99 at Toys R' Us, and it's very well made. Dual motor RS380s, 4WD, uses a 7.2 6-cell pack with a Tamiya connector. I haven't used it in at least 10 years, but I'm sure it works. :) :D

Here's mine. Top-of-the-line Radio Shack Golden Arrow buggy.
Got it around 1990, cost me $89.99 on sale. Ran 15 mph, seemed fast at the time.
I was an electronics nut even as a kid, so I installed resistors and LED's all over it. At one time, it was covered with wires and connections, it was highly blinged out.
When winter came, I made a set of plastic skis and glued them to the tires, and studded the rear tires with picture frame nails superglued into the traction lugs, for ultimate winter handling. A battery pack meltdown and small electrical fire forced the removal of the light kit. My friend's dad stepped on the controller and broke off a stem, and actually yelled at me for it! Then the controller antenna broke off halfway. I soldered a wire on to end. Then the rest of it broke off. The antenna on the car is a piece of steel wire.
The car was pulled out of storage a few years later. I hogged out the battery compartment to allow the installation of a true six-C-sized pack (made it myself), my friend brush-painted the body, the treads were cut off the front tires, and the springs were chopped for a radical lowering effect. This badly affected handling and made it tend to get stuck on small pebbles in the middle of the road. The car was soon-after involved in a head-on crash into a fixed object, which broke the skidplate off the front. Five minutes later, another similar crash caused the frame to fracture. I got to work with superglue and a cotton washcloth, using "redneck fiberglass" to repair it. The on/off switch stopped working, so a little chrome toggle switch replaced it.
I'm not even sure if it works anymore...

Actually I haven't used the Baja yet. I've been getting this Caster 1:8 buggy ready. Once the new radio comes in, I'm going fire this up. :)

I went with the 2.4GHz Futaba 3PM. I almost got the Spektrum, but I've never had problems with Futaba radios, so I'll stick with them.
The Losi 8ight is an insane vehicle. I've never really jumped my cars because of the resulting breakage :(. But I really want to run them on the BMX track here. :D

Steve, that's really cool. That Ofna looks a lot like the Caster buggy I have. I'm wondering if it's based off it. I can see the front suspension is much different though. The Caster uses ball joints and it looks like yours uses king pins. I'm pretty sure Caster copied a lot off of Mugen for the ZX-1.5R.
By the way, look what came today :)

Alright, the Caster ZX-15.R is ready for break-in. I'm just going to use the radio that came with it for break-in and setup. I installed an Ofna failsafe into it, so it should be good to go for now. After break-in, I'll use the Futaba radio/receiver.

Greg, what does the Ofna failsafe do? Does it just kill power to the throttle servo, or is there a mechanical aspect of it that cannot be seen in the picture?

What radio came with that ZX-15.R?
And how do you have a Baja 5t just sitting around and havn't even played with it yet? I would have been installing replacement parts for the thing already.
Awesome radio. For the price you can't hardly beat it. Im thinking about getting it if i get the Baja 5t. Tower Hobbies has it on 3 easy payments of 60 dollars and a $10 mir.

Oh man the stealth trans on an RC10, yeah I had the gold tub. Nearly bought the graphite with the stealth still recall it was $180 all I had to do is swap the electronics. I had three gonzo packs and a tekin charger that ran off the car, nice setup, but I only ran it for fun. I remember putting all the tiny ball bearings in mine after I ran it for a short time, bought it used with some extra stuff and a nice futaba radio with the adjustable response most didn't have then. Put a novak speed control in it later.
Had a pond, so I took carpet tacks and studded the original tires (the narrow ones as we had the low profile then) and filled the tires with that culk rope stuff for home windows to keep the tacks in. Man did they fly on the ice, tons of traction, we raced on the ice all the time. That was about my fourth tire stud design, lol, and the other guy could not keep up. Think those tires are still here but the car I sold. I used that superlube grease on the ball clutch, it worked great. Sure did end up with a lot of money into that car.
I'd get a gas truck now but it was more fun to run against someone and I don't know anyone right now that would run me here...if I could find the time to.
That truck looks like a monster, sure would be a cool giveaway.

Brian, this failsafe is fully electronic, and applies full brakes to the throttle servo when the radio link is lost.

The Caster came (like most RTR models) with a basic AM radio, which is why I installed the failsafe into it. I'll break in the Caster on the AM radio and probably use the Futaba after. The AM radio does have full adjustments though for steering rates, etc., and it seems to work very well since this is the same radio that comes with the F-18 Fusion.
As for the Baja, I'll get to it. I've been too busy with S&F projects to really mess with it. :)

Greg this is my hpi rs4 pro racer 2. Hpi stopped making this car back in late 2001 i believe. It has an old O.S. .12 cv in it with a wolfgang head (the little cv rips against motors with 2x the power!!!). I haven'an it in a few years, I am afriad of breaking it and not being able to find parts. I really want to strap my gps to it and see what it actually does!!!

I also used to have a traxxas nitro rustler back from when the trx pro 15 came with a pull start. That was 12?? years ago i believe, and also an 1/8 scale ofna buggy, although i forget which one exactly
