How did those dual motor boats do on top speed. The ones around here in the late 60,s were actually slower than the singe motor BP,s. They also had to climb a super big hill to get planed off.

I'll get out some old rule books with the records later tonight ... in racing, twins have always smacked singles.

Your local guys probably suffered from more dollars than sense rather than an actual thing with the boats

Twins were almost always faster than singles when the engines were around the 100 HP range and the speeds less than 100 MPH
The power required to push a lower unit through the water goes up as the cube of the speed. When you can get 300 HP out of a single and speeds are well over 100 the twin advantage is less.
In the major endurance marathons the twins had a huge advantage, as they could run fast in rough water.
Besides that, there was always something cool in the symmetry of the twins.

looks kind of familiar...

I remember the broken Bubble Cat sitting in the parking lot next to Skyway Marine. ( I wonder who was driving it?)
I also remember George Grilley doing the same thing in the GCM.
After seeing both of those boats you could not pay me enough to touch the porta-power after planeing off!
I did nose dive the Raveau Cat, but it did not break up. It went completely under the water and smashed the engine faceplates!

Did the same boat get submarined twice? Or was it two different boats.

Same boat, but not stuffed the first time..Richie fixed it fast, but not good..actually the front right hull broke..the result was a stuff..This happened two weeks earlier..

A sign in my shop read:

"You can have it Fast, Good, Cheap..Pick any two..fast and good, not cheap..fast and cheap, not good, or good and cheap, not fast."

you know what George picked..

I was there and saw the incident shown in the photo. It was at Miami Outboard. I have a photo of George laying on the deck after hurting his shouder and arm.

We had the Dicksmarine Regatta 5 this past weekend. Friday night we pulled off my nose coned 2:1 motors and put on a pair of Dicks SSM motors. What a difference, of course I really need to work on my " getting it on plane" form. :)

Danny Leger was even in Town for the fun..

My cousin had a near Blowover in the 14T but he came down rite side up. Scary moment to be sure, bumps and bruises, COLD and Wet. Pride, Hood and distributor damage, but she's still a runner..

Hi Dave,
Both sets are 90 inches but rather than pull and swap lower inits, pull powerheads to remove the shift shafts it was much faster to do a motor swap. 2 Hrs. including a pizza and beer break. It was all plug and play..

Of Course now that the weekend is over Dick is waiting to get his SSM's back.

One of the neat things was the technique to get a small Powercat on a plane with the big motors. First you had to put the plate down. Back in the day it was a power pack, hand hydraulic pump. Then you laid on the deck with you feet to the front and steered with one hand and worked the throttles with the other. Sometimes you had to rock the steering back and forth until you started to get a transition from prop ventilation to thrust.
Once it started to grab you slid back into a sitting position and turned the valve on the hydraulic system to let the plate come up before you nosed in.
After that you came back on the throttles and porpoised like you were on a bronco. Once under full throttle the ride was smooth and sweet.
LilAbner and I are probably the youngets guys around that got to race one of these things and we are both getting close to the big 7oh

Hi Velox,

I didn't have a huge fuel load.. 2- 9's... but I did do the dance. I've got a series of stills that were taken to show the transition. I'll post them later.. Once she came over I jumped in and held on.. Fun ride to be sure.. I understand the age thing.. I'll be 50 pretty soon..

I ran Powercats off and on (along with a couple of Glastrons and an Allison)from 63 to 66. My last race in the 15C was the Lake George Nationals in the marathon and the tunnel tab worked great in a nasty 3 foot chop when set dead level. Of course you would never run it in the down position at or near full speed. My 13C had a single 100 and couldn't pass gas with the props of that era. Planing the 15 was never a problem with stock lower units, but speedmasters were a whole different animal......... lots of slippage and limited forward thrust while planning. I wonder how set of modern 4 blades would hook up? I will find out when my Powercat restoration is complete and let y'all know.

P.S. I'll be 63 next month

All old farts,,,,,,,,,,Somehow @OFF2010 While running at Cadillacs property we have to figure out a way to get a twin powercat or two to run the waterway, plenty of depth smooth water and all fresh water,,,,,,,,,,Will have cmaeras ready. (Unlike the day we all saw Tiger W. on the Intracoastal)

If you guys are up for haveing some vintage boats run at the nest OFF event and we can find a place with good access I am sure that we can get Mullins and a couple others to bring some equipment. (As much as some of you hard of hearing old farts would like it we probably need to stay away from the stackers. ) I am thinking a Glastron Moly with a t1, scatcraft with an inline and maybe a twin Moly either with v-4's or a couple of 150's with speed masters. Maybe we can get Rich to bring the Switzer down for a fly by. Let me know when and where you want to do it and I will start working on some people to bring boats.

All true Mr. Luhrs,

With the 2:1's and choppers The PC has a very decent launch and about 8% slip gps'ng my best runs. When we added the SSM's the launch went away as well as all of the bow lift the choppers generated. With the SSm's the stern is as loose as a goose in a turn, that took a few eye opening adjustments to get used to.

Once on plane with the SSM's my speed gain was 10 MPH and the slip went to a whopping 27%. As Velox pointed out she rode flat and smooth. Granted the motors are probably a tad to high for the SSM's to be the most effecient they can be but it was just for a weekend of some fun runs so we won't playing around to much more with them. As always we have a limited pool of props to play with but, It is a fun ride with the SSm's to be sure.

You can see the difference in boat attitude running the choppers..10 Mph slower as well.

The orange is a Powercat with a bottom that has 3 sections

The blue is a Scott hydro

Orange and white is a 61 PowerCat 14T with a Fantasy Hydro Cab over deck grafted on. 140 Chrysler with racing L/u. It's about 100 Hp over the manufacturers recommendation.

Blue and white is a 63 Fantasy Hydro Twin 105 Chryslers with C/R racers The props on that were what I ended up using on my PC. I got about 1 mph better on the PC, I had better water tho. They Jumped the hydro into orbit all thru the power band.

The props worked well on the Hydro, If we lowered the motors some on the PC it would be a better package. A little more cupping wouldn't hurt either for sure..
