Well, this far I've been into fishing (slow) boats for the most part and I'm super interested in building a pretty swift Merc to use on an 18' or so flats boat. I'm a fisherman at heart, but wouldn't mind seeing some big numbers on the GPS speedo! I am a mixed up marine mechanic/tech/electronic tech/rigging/fiberglass/inboard fixin/half assed diesel mechanic with some fairly solid outboard experience. First question is what model/year I should start out with. I was hoping to get a really run of the mill v6 with some carbs, maaaaybe efi, that needs some love and going through the motor myself. I don't want to buy a super rare or expensive race Merc, especially not a used race motor! You guys seem to like to twist 'em up!!! I like 'em fairly late model, like the saltwater motors (pre-opti). Can I just go get any 135hp and up 2.5 liter motor and make 275-300 reliable hp? Affordable hp? I live near (and am a dealer for) Bob's Machine and really want to dig into a cool project motor. Any advice on initial motor choice helps!!! I guess I'll look for the boat when the motor comes off of the dyno!!!<O:p</O:p<O:p</O:p
