I have a ChrisCat with twin 3.0 Pro Mags, 300HP. I want to get a little better maintenance (three sportsman lowers in two years), I don't really care about slowing down a little. There are two ads for Johnson V8 275HP 300GT motors, would it be smart to put these on my boat, and what would the downfalls be?
Thanks, Ron Luks

As mentioned, don't think you'd be happy. I'm an OMC V8 guy and I'll tell you you'd be moving away from reliability and picking up more weight. Heck, I've even converted the two V8's on my Scarab to run Merc CLE's rather than the stock OMC gearcases.

After talking to a few people, I did let the props come out of the water without throttle usage too many times and I was told I was shifting them too much when docking, I was using the outboards like the inboards on my last boat. I still need a RH 1.75, 20", I have decided to keep the 3.0's, low hours, good compression, and learn to drive the Cat right, it seems after two years I should know.
Thanks for all the input, I know why now the good prices on the V8's.
Thanks again, Ron Luks

that hull will handle the weight of the v8's no problem.if you have the money to get them massaged the mercs won't run with them.

V8's are great as stated before it is a much older motor with more problems. The V8 the gear case is weak spot even though they run them on the 454 and 502 big blocks but they don't like to be surfaced.
I think that the OMC V8's are cheaper to run but you already have the merc's so why back date the boat.
But the V8 does sound better :P
