My lower unit has some light bearing noise..Should i replace the bearings and races etc?It is still working but the plug had some metal but no big chunks, fluid was burnt due to my own fault working on op's boats.
92 xr6 150 fishing motor..
Has 4 water inlets on both sides??I was told this is for low water or some kind of BS.:icon_bs:

That is the small diameter lower unit. If you have metal on the drain plug it needs to come down for inspection. They are'nt the strongest piece.

I have mechanical knowledge and tools from my working days but is there certain special tools i will need?
Thanks capt.

You will need the spanner nut tool to pull the carrier out for a look see. Anything beyond that take it to a dealer or someone who does gearcase work in your area. The tools are spendy,

Takes quite a few special tools to tear down correctly without damaging anything.

If i can get the tools would this be doable?I have built many differentials on cars and trucks.
I just don't want to be wasting time and money..The unit is working fine now if that makes any difference.
I know a guy with the tools but don't want his helper doing this.(just get a bad feeling)

If you want to go about it that way. Just read over the manual carefully. The last I checked I think the gear sets were NLA. So you might have to do some digging for parts.

Its a 1.78 ,4" diam case Mercury put on Xr4s and XR'6s with the Xr6 being the best yes the 4 water inlets were a design for higher case running still used on the Torqmaster case and very Good design. The draw back is its a lite weight case bearing wise and gears are weak at the pinion if i were youI would get it rebuilt while you have all the parts If it pops you wont find them in abundance ANYWHERE:nonod::nonod::nonod: Im a lower unit rebuilder and they are my least favorite case to rebuild .Pops Lavazza on the site has a set of gears and he is a Good Lower unit Man

First replacing bearings alone is not cheap even if you have a dealer account at Promarine and i do, most of their bearings are same brand as Merc just not in Merc packaging and very good parts. There are six or seven bearings in your case depending on what is in your Forward gear 1 or 2 small ones. then there are the seals 5 seals and water pump gaskets and new impeller and a carrier O ring all require special tools to remove and replace then there are new shims as most of the old ones are damaged when removing the forward gear race!! Drive shaft shims are no special tool to remove but a preload pinion tool is required to set lash and pinion height along with spanner nut and pinion height tools along with that preload set so its not a crescent wrench and a pair of needle nose pliers job!! you will also need a way to measure your shims so you can put them exactly as they came out or at least have a starting point if change is needed. not trying to scare you off but its no big deal after you build a few hundred of them:D How close is Magnolia i would be more then happy to assist you in your woes Bobby V:cool:

Texas i am in houston on the north side and i really appreciate your honesty as that is what i was looking for....I got lung problems and i just might see whats out there.I got a good parts guy and a marine guy mechanic but doubt he rebuilds...Let me get this thing out and if shipped to you would it be cheaper than getting a unit(rebuilt). If i buy one off a parts motor i may end up with the same thing.I blame myself for this,
cause i am anal about maintance.lool
If i were to come up that way i would more than likely stay..I grew up in collinsville.I miss it bad.
Thanks for your time and knowledge.

Texas between you and Chris Carson, both of y'all as well as others are and have been so helpful for no other reason than to help a first timer keep fishing..This place is the best and i trust everyone here more than my personal contacts. Thanks to you all and S&F..
Texas this may sound weird but i changed the oil and filled with mopar synthetic rear end 70/140 and ran today for several hours and i don't hear the noise now but the lake was to ruff and had the little woman so i couldn't run it up to the vibration point at 5k..I hope i caught it in time or you will hear from me and i don't expect free labor..Thanks again
