I am buying a boat with a 2002 merc 300x promax on it and it has 97 hrs on it. I was wondering if these are decent motors and how long they normally last (it is on a bass boat). Any info would be appreciated.

Thanks

I do not own one, but I have the Factory manual for the motor. I own a Pro XB 250 EFI as a point of reference. Have not heard "bad" things about the motor. Be aware though, that there is two different models for 2002. The ECM part numbers are as follows. Model year 2002 859610-26 2002 1/2 859610-68. I point this out only because the idle is different within 50 RPM. Motor has 61 CC and uses premium fuel. Gear case could be Torquemaster,Sportsmaster, or ClE. I will not bore you with any more details as they are insignificant IMHO. Hope that this helps. Hopefully, owners of this motor will chime in for you. At least I have you started.

Very happy with mine, a 2004 MY. The only issue I've had is the rubber bellmouth grommet on the throttle body came loose and jammed the throttle linkage. A simple RTV fix.

Run fresh strained premium fuel each time out, good oil and keep an eye on your gearcase lube, stock sporty likes to let water in.Get the MadEfi quad seal holder and modify to dual shift shaft seals (also MadEfi).Mine never even sneezed and I ran the dog shizit out of it for three years. Also change the fuel filter under the cowl twice a season.
