Over the last month or so I’ve sold off all of the lens and camera's I did not use and bought a few new things. Now I'm really looking hard at the Nikon 17-55mm. I had a Nikon 12-24, but it was just too short for my style of shooting. I really like my 18-200, but at times I’d like a faster lens and of course the build quality is not the best. basically I want a fast standard zoom and the 17-55 is the only one that's comes to mind.

Does anybody have any experience with this lens?

my current list is:

Nikon D300s
Nikon 18-200mm VR
Nikon 70-200mm VR

Casey,

I have a D300, 18-200vr (don't use anymore), 70-200vr and 17-55. I have had my 17-55 for about a year now and have been very happy with the lens. I bought used off ebay only because the seller was from Houston and we met. I thought I was doing pretty good with the 18-200vr at all our family gatherings but it doesn't come close to the 17-55 IMO. I do wish it had a VR but oh well. Seems others are opting for the 24-70vr more for the Fx.

Let's see if this works. The photo's are of my grandson. I wanted to test a bounce flash and needed his support. But....he wasn't going to have any of it and proceeded to tell me when I caught this shot. I cropped and PS some. Summary - I like mine, real good glass. Hope this helps.

Casey, the 17-55 is a great, but not stellar lens in my opinion. Build quality is excellent, but I feel its optical performance does not quite meet my expectations for a pro lens in this class. That's not to say it's an underperforming lens - not at all, it performs great, but it will not match the resolution of your 70-200. But, if you need a 2.8 constant-aperture lens in this focal range, it's very good. Give one a try though, that's the best way to know if it's right for you.

Casey, I agree with Greg, you just have to try it out. Since you live close by, if you want, you can borrow mine and do your test checking. I will just need it back before Turkey Day.

As for the 70-200vr, it's what I use most of the time. The two pics are from the air show that was in town. Since I had to reduce these down not sure if you can see but take a look at the second seater (second shot). Could not help but laugh when I saw him. Where else could you be so underpaid but highly motivated.

I've got 300 70 - 200 2.8 and 24 to 70 2.8
I tried both 17 - 55 and 24 - to 70 at nikon dealer I think 24 to 70 is better for more
reach on the other hand 24 - to 70 is good for the people who are thinking to
change from d300 to d3 full frame in the future but both are great lenses

David thanks for the info and the offer, but I think as soon as my paypal account gets enough money back in it I’m going to just go ahead and buy one. I know I’ll like it. I’m thinking the Friday after Thanksgiving run on the San Jac will be a good time to try out my new D300s and 70-200. You should try and make it.

Greg thanks for the advice.

I got one off Texas Photo last night from a local guy for a price that was too good to pass up. I can't wait to try it out!
