I had to put my 14 year old black lab Ike down today. Man this sucks.:( He has been going downhill lately and all of a sudden could not get up and started having seizures. I loved that dog more than I care about most people I know. I've had him since the start of my senior year of high school, almost half of my life. I know he is up in heaven looking down on me. I wouldn't wish this kind of heartache on my worst enemy. To any of you who have never had to deal with losing your best friend, I hope you never have to.

It is a sadness that most of us know and never want again, for sure it's a truly tough road to take... I saw this poem first here on S&F and I try to re-use when someone like Yourself can use it.... I'm sorry, and I wish the best...
RAINBOW BRIDGE:
Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.
When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge.
There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together.
There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.
All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by.
The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.
They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent; His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.
You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.
Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

You gave him all you could. A great life for him and a great companion for both of you. He is content.
As soon as you can bear it, you need to adopt another dog that NEEDS a good home. Won't replace Ike because they are all different, only the same in one way, THEY NEED A GOOD HOME!
RIP Ike, say hello to all my guys an gals.

Sorry about your loss, I also have a black lab (Harley), he's my best friend. Can't go boating without him. He's always with me. Hard for him to hang on about 75 but he don't care. He has papers way back. Top blood line, if I ever breed I'll give you a puppie. I feel your pain. Woody

I've never met so many people who share the same attachment to their dogs as I have here on S&F... I always felt that they were a part of the family, not a "pet". Pet is a verb, something you do. A dog is a pack animal, they can survive alone, but they can't truly live alone. We have to be the "pack" for them.
Sometimes they come into our lives at a particular time, or for a particular reason, though we may not know it at the time. When their work is done, and they have given us all the love and companionship they can they go home to wait for us. They show us how to truly love, unconditionally, without predjudice or hidden agenda.
It is hard to do, but there is another family member out there just waiting to be found so they can start doing their job.... Go find them...
I know Beemer was there for me when I had to put my Brit down. I'd had him for about 3 months, and complained almost everyday what a freaking spaz he was. But one day he came over to me and just laid down at my feet and looked up at me, then looked at Brit laying in the other room, and I knew then the time had come. That was 5 1/2 years ago. I still miss Brit, found her favorite stuffed animal uner the desk a couple of months ago and teared up again. That ugly ass teddy bear was the only toy she would play with, packed it around all over the house , but NEVER took it outside.
Sorry for the rambling.... If we truly love our furry kids we remember them, the good and the bad, all the funny quirks, and, sadly, we remember our last few minutes with them, knowing they are leaving us behind if only for a while.
(I miss you Brit...)

Sorry about your loss.:( I had to put my 12 year old Black lab and then my 14 year old black down. Sucks for sure. I have a bull Mastiff thats 9 already and I cant emagine what Ill do when shes ready for Doggy heaven. They say the best thing to do is pick your new dog as soon as possable. The sooner you adopt a new Dog the sooner you can start loveing it and it back. Give a new dog the oportunity to have a great owner like you.

sorry to hear about you losing your "4 legged family member with a tail" as I call them......
amy and I don't have any "2 legged children", but when asked we say we have 11 kids, all are four legged and have tails. 6 bark and 5 meow.
best wishes in getting through the loss.

Although I have never met most of you in person I cannot express enough gratitude for all the kind words spoken. Ike will never be able to be replaced as he was a special as they come. It is like the dog could read my mind when we shot ducks. We do have a 4 year old chocolate female named Lanie and one of her offspring, a two year old chocolate named Moose that has been testing my patience but is coming around. I do not ever think Ike will be replaceable but I am going to do my best with Moose just like I did with Ike and we will see how he turns out. If I can just get the puppy out of him I think he will be fine. It is so weird when I look out in the backyard now and Ike isn't laying out there. I guess time heals all wounds. Thanks again, Blake.

Glad to see ya posting.
I agree on how ya feel when you no longer see them where they use to be :(:(:( that's the hardest part to me, the constant reminder that their gone.
Keep your chin up brother and put some work into Moose, he sounds like just the medicine you need !!
