can any one tell me roughly how determine the age of my old 35 hp merc there is no stamping or serial nos.the cowling that goes around the head is black and the word mercury is in silver chrome
with a silver line abobve and below mercury.

Gus, you have not yet given us enough information. Is this a 2 cylinder motor or a 4 cylinder? There is a serial number stamped lightly in the aluminum on the top behind the flywheel. You have to remove the top to see this and may have to carefully remove some paint (chemical remover would be best).

Is the word Mercury on the band or above the band on the side of the top?

It may be critical to eventually find the serial number as there were 4 different 35hp Mercs.

Some people over look the serial/model plate on the top of the steering/swivel clamp assembly. Are you familiar with where this should be? When you are in the boat, it is the top forward piece of the stationary clamp assembly....visable below the powerhead from in the boat. The plate should be there with the model information, fuel/oil ratio and serial number. If it is missing there should be 4 holes where it was once riveted on.
