Does anybody know if a Torque Tamer installed on '85 Evinrude V6 with the swept back skeg will work properly? Curious since the skeg has so much sweep.
Thanks:confused:

I used the L&S torque tab on my 175 Evinrude, circa 1987, along with my '84 Evinrude 140 V-4 and my '92 225. It fit just fine on all 3 of them. I sometimes grind the top and bottom faces of the tab to be parallel to the water surface with the engine trim in the position for best speed on each individual boat. Most of the time the surfaces will be close enough with the stock tab, but if its off more than 5 degrees or so I'll usually grind these surfaces a bit. Takes about 20 minutes extra fitting time. On the OMCs I usually leave the stock cav plate tab on also, and turn it so that its facing slightly to the left of center when viewed from the rear. This allows the stock tab to counter the skeg tab at low speeds, but at high speeds the stock tab is out of the water and the skeg tab takes over. This tends to neutralize torque over a wider range than with just the skeg tab alone. Each boat rigs differently, and this is what worked for me on Bajas and Checkmates.

Did these motors have that long, swept back skeg? I thought about cutting mine off even with the back of gearcase so I would have skeg straight up and down like other motors then torque tamer would be positioned right like other motors. Otherwise it would be laying at a pretty sharp angle.

The 140 was a bit more traditional. The skeg acts to keep the hull tracking to where the steering is set, so cutting down the skeg will reduce its area and may well lead to some steering wander at higher speeds. I always thought the OMC skegs on the V-6s were a bit small to begin with compared to a similar sized Merc.
