View Full Version : remove rusted steering tube
Guys have a o/s swivel bracket that has a rusted steering tube.
Trying to remove it and no luck even w/heat dont want to break anything.
any tips????

Soak as much as you can with PB blaster. A good sized hammer and transom bolt to help push the rod through the tube...

spray the PB on it while its still hot,it soaks it up much better that way
Thanks guys i got the tube to move 1/4 in.
think it has a slight bend in it and dont want to break swivel bracket.
Took it to machine shop maybe they can get it out.
I have never seen a steering tube that would not just tap out.

its the tube not cable rod.

You might want to try alot of heat pb blaster and a air chisel just get it to move about 1in one way then go back the other do that until it loosens up we deal with this kind of stuff on old rusted up outboards all the time down in the keys with the salt sure is nice to work on motors that come out of fresh water for a change Dave:cheers:
