I sold a trolling motor that was destroyed during shipping by ups, should I take it back and refund selling price and shipping or should the buyer deal with ups. I want to do the right thing that is commonly excepted.

Thanks very much Leon Pugh

If you boxed it, made the shipping arrangements, and shipped it I think you should probably look after it, as he had no control over this outcome. Not that it is your fault.

Some times a unbiased oppinion really helps make sound decisions.

I have no experience in this area , but I do want to applaud you for wanting to do the "right thing". I'm sure it will work out fine for both buyer/seller with that approach . Oh ... and you are from Sacramento too!! Dave

Check with UPS first. Was it insured? Not sure about UPS but at FED EX there's an automatic amount that goes on every package. It has to do with stating the value on the shipper. Sometimes they want the recipient to file the claim. If you want to do the refund that's cool. Just let the guy know he may need to help you out with filing the claim.

Just put the shoe on the other foot.

What would you expect from a seller that did everything you did?

There's your answer. :)

Whoa...Don't get the wrong idea...I wasn't suggesting he not reimburse the guy.

I was letting him know that there is automatic coverage at Fedex and to check with UPS before he eats the cost alone.

Nah, my response wasn't in reference to your post, but the orriginator. You're a good guy. ;)

Mine was a generalization that its good to let our conscience lead once in a while.

Here's what you can expect from Unresponsible Package Service: It's ALMOST ALWAYS the fault of the person who shipped it because of improper packaging.

Unless they've changed their strategy in the last year, they won't deal with the buyer AT ALL, except maybe to inspect it there in some cases. They'll ONLY pay the shipper and they'll first try out the improper packaged argument. I was so pissed at 'em one time on a damaged printer that I tried to get the State Insurance Commissioner involved because they're basically selling insurance and then trying every way possible to try and deny payment. Good luck with the claim, but unless they've changed it's gonna' be a challenge.

I've only had one damaged item that I've shipped and UPS payed, no problem.
It's the shippers responsability to file for damages with UPS. FYI, UPS will pay up to 100 dollars for damaged items if you didn't get shipping insurance. So if UPS is to blame you can at least get 100 bucks for your damaged trolling motor. So ya won't be out the total ammout ya refund the buyer.

I use FEDEX exclusively. I will only ship high value items through them because their track record has been excellent.

I had a claim for shipping damage. All they needed was photos. I was reimbursed within a week.

I had another claim for a package that was left on a porch and disappeared after. Almost my stupidity as I packed it in a Corona box. Some kid likely saw it and grabbed it and ran. Either way FedEX reimbursed me within a few days.

Ups has always reimbursed me for any items I have shipped that got damaged. They will only reimburse the declared value
