View Full Version : Don't drink and boat: Pics from Hardy Accident
This thread is over on OSO. Terrifying deal, but glad everyone will be ok ....eventually.
A good reminder for us about two things ..
1. dont drink and drive.
2. dont run fast at night, especially without lights. :(
Here's the entire thread and all of the pics...

I think the real issue is:
Don't boat after taking a stupid pill.
Drinking to excess is a severe stupid pill but it is certainly not the only one, and every one of them can kill you and worse - innocent people just out to have a good time.
Be Safe

Although I'm not condoning drinking and driving or belittling what happened to that boat but where is the Dinking part? They don't even know who was driving. Did they test all the people and all were drunk? Drinking is a good excuse for what happened because if the driver wasn't drunk it's even worse. He stone sober drove into a light.
Something in the law but not too many people do. A boat is suppose to have lookout on it. I think if it's at anchor then this isn't required.
Amazing no one was killed, including the sky launched impacting boat.
We had already left Hardy by the time this happened Sat night, but a person who helped rescue the injured gave the first report.
I think he said the other boat had 3 persons on board, all of them underage - and drinking.
They were in a Checkmate, running at full throttle, at night, with no lights, when they hit the other boat. They were lucky the speeding boat was going fast, because it launched up and over the boat, lessening the impact.
There was actually a lady laying down in the cabin when the boat hit, which then flew to the back where a group of people were standing. The lady in the cabin had head injuries. The owner is still having back and leg problems. Another lady in the back rec'd internal injuries.
But it sure could have been much worse :(
LT -- I'm not so sure you want that hat. It's seen a few too many waves I think. But I do know where you can get another. ;)

About a month ago on the southern end of our lake a young
stock car racer bought is first boat an 18' open bow fishin
boat . On his maiden voyage him and an 18 yr old girl went for
a midnite cruise and anchored a 100' offshore at 2 a.m.
Well some drunk dude decided to run right over them and leave the scene with no mayday calls or nothin ......:(
Took about 2 weeks after but they finally caught the guy tryin to repair his boat in his front yard .......
So far he is only charged with leaving the scene and tampering
with evidence ( Trying to repair his boat )
They have him out on bail but was convicted by a Grand Jury so
we'll see what happens......

I saw that one too, Woodco.
They said his passenger who was with him that night is who turned him in.

Thanks BK - I will wear it proudly at Rumble III.
Like I said - a serious stupid pill and innocent people pay the price. Add to that a compete lack of concience - damn, makes you wonder where we are headed.

It seems to me we had a post on Night Driving the boats a while back. I think It's stupid, but many of the NY area boaters thought it was Cool, and Fun. I still can't understand the facination with high speed cruising, when you can't see anything. Maybe it's different in the NY area, with harbor lights, or something, but up here, when it's night, you can't see anything, unless there is a nearly full moon.
Hardy is where I boat at every weekend, now these Dockheads have probably screwed it up for the rest of us. The local law enforcement treats us hot-boaters pretty well as a rule, but now they'll be forced to have a stronger hand. There's a good possiblility that we may get numerous new regulations thrown at us, that will take a lot of the fun out of hot-boating, just from this incident, caused by stupidity...One regulation I could live with, is a No-Wake after Sunset. maybe that would save some of these self-destructing A-Holes, who also injure innocent bystanders.

PS...I don't want to hear any of you defending high speed night driving. If you do, let me know where you boat, so I can stay away from that area, day or night.

Better stay off lake Ontario. Take a look at my avatar. It's a real big lake.
Where I boat at night at high speed there is nothing around. If there is, like a boat, then the navigation lights are plainly visible- like a mile away?
If they're sitting there dark then they better turn them on when they hear an engine or see other lights. There are sail boats too after all. They sail the entire lake and don't pull off when it gets dark.
There is a high hazard like you think and a low hazard. It depends on many things. But if anyone read the original thread on the other site, it mentioned the boat had its lights on and was under a lighted area. Surpisingly enough this doesn't help your being seen. It does put you in an area you shouldn't be driving like this though. At least I wouldn't. Thats like driving 10' from shore.
For me to drive fast at night I need dark, not light. A moon hurts not helps. To see, your using the navigation lights on the other boats. If there are any around. I might be in 200' of water. There might be some crazy fisherman out this far but they have nice bright laterns. Usually 3 miles out is far enough, thats about 80'. 180' is around 6 miles out. Most people stay in about 20' of water, less than a mile from shore, day or night. Again what boats that are out. It isn't like boatnik harbour with a bajillion boats.
Another nice thing about running at night is the lake is calm. You might have the ability to run in "rough" water, but rough water here sinks ships. When its calm enough to run on, the shore and bottom affect the surface as you move along the shore. This doesn't happen at night.
If I was to boat where you do, most likely I wouldn't be going fast. Since you can't understand it then the area must be too hazardous for it.
I see some of you running on those narrow rivers and it makes me feel clausterphobic.

I'm just wondering why you are the only one able to post a photo on the board!?
Hi Mike,
You can still post pictures, but ONLY if they are already online somewhere.
Here's the trick:
Find the pic you want to post on some other site -- and "RIGHT CLICK" it. If it is a standard image, then you'll get a pop-up that gives details about that picture.
At the bottom of that pop-up is something called "PROPERTIES".
Click that and you'll see "ADDRESS (URL)" with the link following
Copy that link.
When you reply to a message here, you'll see the "IMG" button at the top, just under the smiley faces. Click "IMG" and paste that link in.
Voila! Your image appears!

I'll have to remember that. I was wondering how everybody did that. I didn't think that everybody could remember all the slashes and colons to post a link.

B is bold
I is italic
U is Underline
SIZE is what is says (but Im not sure that this one works)
SIZE
FONT lets you change styles: FONT
COLOR lets you change to various colors
http is how you insert a hyperlink
@ is how you insert an email link
(but I think this forum is formatted that those appear automatically)
Quote helps you set up your reply,
So your quote looks like this
