Listening some cable news, the question came up. "what happened 50 years ago"? Well I knew I was not that famous as at 17, tossed out a car accident (middle seat of 3, not driving) and broke my back. But did make the front page Suburban Life paper. They did get my age wrong though, and not 14, but all us 17. Well, I wasn't mentioned (answer next).......(and that was a 58 Plymouth with a 392 Hemi!)

Hey JP! When a kid in Illinois my dads brother went to SoCal. We did a road trip Rt 66 (did it twice before I was 12) and while there, Whammo had just came out with this hula hoop thing! It had not gone nation wide yet, and bought one and when got back Illinois, I was "king" of the alley with this "Hoop" thing as still unknown there! 2 weeks later seems everybody had one!

Holly Rob..... Nice souvenir...Hé!!! This girl taste good.... Sure....
Little more on that "Hoop". So as getting worn out, me and a kid friend cut it in half, straightened out, cut a opening about 6 inches in to fish out a M80 shoved in and fish the wick out. Stuck the back in the dirt, just wick showing, rolled a marble down and let the witch! BOOM! Found out we put a window out the grammar school 1/2 block away! Nope never caught on that one, but cops found the marble! Too damn much fun!

For some reason my area has attracted several Canadian musicians as a place to live. All the Bachman's have homes here. You know the band Bachman Turner Overdrive. Tim Bachman is a real estate here in town. Jerry Doucette has lived next door to my best friend in elementary school for over 40 years now. Bryan Adams has a home here too. As does Sarah McLachlan. A not well known musician, also lives out here. He's more known as a record producer, mainly Metallica. His names Bob Rock.
Net local bars here sometimes get surprise acts from all the above. Saw Doucette a few ago performing at our local Neighborhood association dinner.

Its great especially the guys from the 1970's.

Oh forgot in 08 the record producers band from the 1980's performed at the towns next door too me Canada Day Celebration. Its kind of cool that these older guys do perform here like a local band.
His band did make it on Miami Vice as background music for a scene.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8FOf-E-WRKo
What I like about bands from the 1970's and 1980's. You go to their concerts and it sounds the same as their album. Music today is so cleaned up in the studio. Even mediocre musicians on the radio, or if you download the song. It sounds awesome. But you see them live and its like a lousy local bar cover band.
Back in the 1980's, if a band even with a few hit songs on the radio. If they sucked live like say Nickleback. They went nowhere and nobody remembers them now. Nowday's no talent say Justin Bieber are the new music stars.
The reason the record producer own band never made it. They suck live big time!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LWa_0s9I_tM
I'm not a big fan of say REO Speedwagon. Fact is they put on an awesome live show. Or the same with the Bare Naked Ladies. They don't get much radio play in the US because their songs kind of suck. The best they've is the Big Bang Theory theme song. Or maybe the song If I had A Million Dollars. Live they are awesome. Since the late 1980's if the Ladies do a show in Vancouver I go. Even more awesome because they are not mega stars in the USA. Their Seattle shows are at local bars and even better!
In the 1970's and 1980's the whole album had to be liked. If they put on a equally great show that sounded as good or better then the album. They became super stars. U2 is the best example of this.

Theres MANY bands before that only stated a Radio song, did just as good live, and better with major events when "simple had the talent". One alone ? STONES! I was 12 when they hit the scene, and STILL AT IT? 55 YEARS LATER?
On BTO" There was (back Illinois then after out Nam, still a kid early 70's) a outdoor 4 band all day event and ya drove in. Behind the small stadium was the biker parking. BTO had just played, (TCB last) still late AFT, daylight still and some other band stage now. Well the biker outlaws had a "bit of difference" and GUN FIRE! People that side (I was across looking) panicked and a mad dash out that side? SIT STILL, or "walk into the fire"?
Didn't last long, band never stopped playing, and then a break for evening chow, smoke, toke, snort, get wound up for dark now, Head Liner band. WHO? HUMBLE PIE!
2 vids.. BTO TCB. and some one that gun fight got probably got "30 days"

I was only two when BTO became famous. I knew of Doucette because he'd have other musicians at his house and it was next door to my friends. Six years old and could hear them practicing next door. I didn't see them as rock stars, etc. Lived in normal suburban houses. The others like BTO, I learned about them mainly because of the Worlds Fair in Vancouver, Expo 86. Many Canadian acts played free concerts there. 14 in 1986. My taste was more Pink Floyd, Led Zep, Eagles, etc. Was also developing a taste for late 70's punk, Sex Pistols, DOA, etc. I was so clueless on mainstream rock of the day. Coming back from Los Angeles to Vancouver. The stewardess asked me who Bon Jovi was and why a bunch of people wanted their autograph. Even though it was summer 86. I had no clue who they are!
Now for something completely different

Saw them live after out Nam, now in Germany (1970) a 4 band, general admission all day indoor stadium event. Doors opened, pick up yer feet and get carried in! And take in what ya want wine! I was sitting next to a German bunch that spoke no English, but from there side came "a wave" of bottles wine. I went to give it back after a taste, and gestured me simple? No, pass it on! OK then another bottle showed up, and same "move it down the line" Then the Hash pipes came by and same thing! Last one to get it M/T did a refill and pass on. Great people, great time, and Deep played last....simple blown away. Don't remember much, but I had the Battalion Jeep, and some how the 4 us made it back to base.

Anyway, long time ago bought my first house. 1986. Tossed a BIG all "House warming party" And the Bon Fire 6 foot high? Tossed gas on it, shot a sky rocket in and WHOOSH! Heated up the earth! BUT! Had my "outlaw bikers" invited free (and all kegs beer needed them) everyone was anyway, my dime. But had to bring in a trailer stage, do crowd control, and the "honcho" was a great guitarist, as the band. Mostly Chuck Berry! Kinda funny too, as the only "crowd control", which behaved well, but two THEM got in a fight! Guess they didn't read the SIGN"!
No colors, no guns, no fire works..(I had plenty) no kids and "leave yer attitude on the bike" Worked fine until the beers hit! And a GREAT TIME was had by all! Ya know ya tossed a good one when morning looked back out and (after tripping over the many in the house)..looked like a "tent homeless camp"...but what gave it away was ALL THE HARLEYS parked in front the tent! I'm going around checking see who's alive, and one tent had one those (then) 2 inch high "Fire Hydrant" front. Sold as has had bubble gum in it. Asked "whats this little Fire Hydrant front the tent"?
"So nobody parks in front"...HA! Damn bikers! Anyway...RIP "Chuck"..

Todays death of Soundgardens front man Chris Cornell. Brought back great memories of my younger days. Having a 19 drinking age, even today it brings over lots of American kids here on weekends. Back in my day, police kind of turned a blind eye to under age drinking, if it was somewhat a safe environment. Even today, the police while they don't endorse under age drinking. They tend too tolerate a house party with some booze and pot, as long as the kids are not causing problems. About the worse thing that happens even today with teen parties with booze and pot, is the police break up the party.
I'm not saying bars let in under age. Just its a lot easier for a 16 year old to sneak in a bar here. Once in they rarely checked id and even the police didn't come in looking for under age drinkers.
although on house parties: http://www.abbynews.com/news/abbotsford-police-caution-against-hosting-graduation-parties/
Note the police didn't fine the adults. No teens got arrested for pot or under age drinking, etc. Even the police spokesperson said the fines for allowing under age drinking are no big deal. Worse case scenario here for teens drinking and doing some pot. The cops confiscate the pot and booze and send you home.
Net result I was lucky in that getting into bars at 16 was no big deal. Even if the cops came in the bar and checked your id. All they would do is kick you out. Pretty much all the American kids took advantage of this. A little pot no biggie, the cops took the joint. Our knick name in Seattle is Vansterdam! So most of the up coming bands in Seattle and even LA played here in those days. A lot of the bands in say Seattle came here because most of their members and fans too young for bars in the states.
Basically turning 16 in 1988 and 19 in 1991. We basically hung out in a bar downtown every day that had live bands every night. Pretty much all the Seattle grunge era bands played there at some point in their early careers. Saw Nirvana there in 1990, as an example.
Soundgarden, Alice In Chains, Pearl Jam, etc too.
Anyway, sad day, since I've been a fan since Soundgarden's beginnings on the music scene....

Thats the way it was me in the 60's (born 1950) back in Illinois Chi burbs. Seems a party somewhere every W/E and the bars and the rock band concerts. 21 drinking age, but no one cared. Hell, cops see us at the biker bar all night and basic if you could start it after, good nuff. If pulled over, cop say " go home right now and if I see ya again its jail".."Ye sir". Damn, even tossed a 1968 Graduation party my parents house (think my dad got more wasted than we did!) and couldn't park within 3 blocks the place. Had the whole damn school there AS THE cops! They knew us little outlaws enough and now at 18, many off to college, many off for a "Senior vacation in Vietnam". They were both happy to see us go, as sad as we sure .."kept them busy at the job"! Funny too as I went in the Army, to Nam, Germany, and got and STILL HAD A MONTH to go before "legal drinking age"
Sure was fun the old says.

When lived Illinois, went Milwaukee "BDay" party Harley Davidson. First was 1988, (and the first too) with ZZ top headliner. Went again 1993, forgot the band..(partied out?). Then moved west coast, but in 1998, back there thought the "Stones"? Nope. this "who's Kid Rock"? Well, he REALLY rocked that place, and a fan made by all, as me when known! Him and Cheryl Crow. Both greats!
