Certain "good" powerheads from the factory came marked with a J, indicating they met the closest specs allowed for racing rather than just being another motor off the line.

Now that's a first for that explanation...
Where are you coming up with that? Every 1500XS motor was a "J" block. All in all just another motor off the production line. The port timing is unique along with several bolt on parts, but no selection using a "good" or some other criteria was used to earn the stamp.

Every XS is a J, but some pre XS motors apparently carried the J mark, too

Sure there were "J" powerheads used on the 1500 shorts prior to the introduction of 1500XS. There still was never any kind of a selection process to qualify as a certian "good" powerhead. They were just another production motor, built to the "J" spec.

Do you know when they would have started this practice? From '73 on, or only later on ('75-ish)?

I don't know the exact year, 73 or 74 I think

Seems as if the original '73 1500 short shafts were just 150 powerheads. The first 1500XS motors showed up in late '76 and there were some 76 1500s with that appeared to be XS motors (as we know them) with blue decals. I'm not really sure what happened in 74 and 75. It wil be interesting to see where the S?N of the original "J" comes in at. I'll look at my parts list when I get some time and see where some of the key part numbers show up.

Mid year 74 were the first J blocks. These were also the first ones to have threaded holes for the crankcase cover bolts instead of through bolts with nuts. 74 was the first year of the louvered cover 1500 and the first year of the external(bottom cowl) mounted fuel pump.

I agree with this. The '74 Merc brochure shows a tunnel on front WITHOUT the louvered cowl, which the '75 (all of which had J blocks) came with. I've always thought that the J block came along SOMETIME during the 74 model run, and probably accompanied the louvered cowl. The exhaust port timing is different between the J and std powerhead in 74, and ALL J and XS powerheads after that time. The J powerheads were installed ONLY in shortshaft engines from the factory, and ALL shortshaft engines after whatever time in '74 they made the change had the J powerheads.

Which gearcase does it have? If it still has the original it could be one of three. Small skeg with side water pick ups, large skeg with side water pick up or large skeg with bottom water pick ups. Depending on when it was built.

I think the serial number was about 200 from the starting number in 74 ... so it was probably actually made late in 1973. I think it has the small skeg.

I think the answer varies with the exact motor. The value of a motor dressed up by the factory with the red XS decals and low water pick up is going to be a lot more than the more plain jane J motor like the one my friend just picked up for his Carlson semi tunnel.
It will be interesting at this time of year (coming up on Christmas) to see if someone has the side cash to buy the motor on eBay. The trim pump stuff being missing and the wiring going bad might be a deal killer for a lot of people at the asking price. I think if the wiring was good it would have already sold or at least would fairly quickly after people recovered from Christmas.
How much does the trim stuff and replacement wiring harness go for?

Someone here does not have to go on ebay to buy, they can buy it right here on S&F;):smiletest: With the paypal and ebay costs if purchased on Ebay that is what I would need to get for it. Someone here can get it for less;). I did get my hands on a trim pump that I will include.

So you thinking it's a 74 with 75 decals? I don't think it would have been built in 73 unless it has a replacement powerhead. None of the 73's were J blocks. Does the serial numbers match?

The whole bill is going to be the big one for most people. If you want a like new motor, well it ain't gonna be cheap. A lot of the costs will depend on how much you are capable and willing to do.
The CDI internal wire harness is available for just about $125.
Repro decals are $300 (red ones)
Paint ~ $1000
Rebuild ~ $3000
Misc ~ $1000 - $3000
Motor ~ $2400
Or you could just buy a nice original motor.

Serial numbers match and the block has a J stamped on it.
Like cars, production of each year's model starts in the fall of the previous year. The first few 1974 model motors are on the assembly line and out the door in 1973. I meant that the number is about 200 AFTER the first number listed for 1974's. My mistake on lack of clarity using the word "from" when I meant "after"

Yeah, the trim pump has a sticker that says "High Pressure Pump, use only on 1400 and 1500" is there a difference???? It looks like the one on my 1250. Follow that previous link and you will see the pump.
