i think around 1988 is when they started making the 4.0l..... i have a 3.6 GT that is a 87 model

85-87 were 3.6's, 88+ were 4.0's

I have heard that a 3.6 punched to 4.0 specs is the best for performance but it leaves very little room for error. Personally, if I were going to build a V8, it'd be a 4 liter.

I believe stock the 3.6 was a better engine. Put out more horsepower and turned more rpm's. I was kind of disappointed when I first got my 4 litre performance wise back in 1989. It was very dependable and smooth running though.
