 Building a new motor for bass boat use. 2.4 200 with 99 model cowling and efi set up. Had to run a Y brace on steering on old motor to control the boat. And on this one I really have concerns about using solid mounts because of extra vibration into the boat. I want it smooth and quiet for fishin. Idea is to find some very firm rubber mounts. My friends are running 2.5 200's with no Y brace and they do fine with their boats. Anyone know where to buy some semi solid mounts?

I have never heard of anything like that. What is the reason for the change? Are you going to be running fast enough to need solid mounts? Maybe just try it first and see what happens.
Best wishes, Carter Powell

Well my motor I am running now is a stock 2.4 200 and it was jerking sideways enough to nearly wreck the boat when I let off and even when I let off easily it was still wild. I cured it with an old Y brace made by Bob's machine. I like it as it does not transfer a lot of vibration and noise into the boat. Newer motors like the XS motors 200hp and up have very firm semi solid mounts. I was hoping there were some aftermarket ones for a 2.4 200. Now is the time to get em before I assemble everything. I dont want to pull a powerhead to install mounts that I should have used in the first place---DUH ??????
Stick with the tie plate. Better control of the motor and no vibration. I have never liked the transfer of torque on those bottom crankcase cover bolts but I have not seen one fail there. Done it many times.

Yea, I have always been concerned about the torque on those bolts too! But like you say it has been fine for a couple years --no problems. I am not sure that Bob's still even makes the tie plate or Y brace but I made a pattern of it before I installed it so I could make one in my shop. Just a 1/8th thick piece od stainless steel. Metal cutting band saw a file and a drill press and I got it. Would buy one but never see em used anymore???

Just take the stock mounts and cut a 3/16 off the back end of them so they bottom out faster on the washer.;) That helps new ones last longer. I also use epoxy on the lower swivel splines to take up slop, that makes the lower mounts work to keep the motor tight.

Vegas. I Dont have a Pic of Y brace as it is currently on the motor I am running now. I made a pattern of it though and can reproduce one myself in my shop but it might become time consuming....
And thanks Dave, I might try the mods on the mounts. It sounds like it might solve the handling problem... Might not need the brace but might use it along with mod mounts.... Thanks, Bob

Sierra has some made out of Delron. they work real well and are not so stiff to shake the boat. I use them on a bunch of boats and never had any one complain about them.

Ok I will check with Sierra about them.... I figured there was a better aftermarket product. I might also still use the steering bracket as it wont have to do all the work with more solid mounts. I really didnt want to use the all metal mounts because ot vibration. Hey we even isolate the trolling motor to keep from alerting the fish! LOL

How does the y brace work and how does it install. I cant picture it, and if it would work on my vegas without popin ythe head, i might try that

If I remember they bolt to the ft power head mtg studs(on the exh hsg) and to the steering arm ( where the link rod ) that ties steering arm to the end of the steering cables.

That's right. It is in the shape of a Y and holds the powerhead to the steering arm without any loos motion. The rest of the motor is held in the rubber mounts. My 18ft ranger drives totally like another boat with it on there. Terrible without it on there. I will try to find the pattern I made and take a pic of it. I plan to make another one going by the pattern I made without taking the one off my boat. I plan to leave it on that motor. The nuts won come completely off to take the Y brace on and off without breaking the gasket seal between the powerhead and mounting plate.
