What is the story behind the spacer? or theory? seems like it would be just that much farther for air to travel? has anyone seen a definite advantage to running it? Thanks

welcome to the site...
i think you will get different answers on this..... the merc drag motor come stock with them. i have heard that mercury 260, 280, drags are balanced air volume motors. in other words the front half air volume matches the exhaust volume. they are very close to the same. "i think it was measured from the horn and front half vs the exhaust chest and tunner", so is the 260's and 280's. this is how it was explained to me...... i have a 260 with drag exhaust chest and i run one on there. i also have one on a lightly cut 260 as well. i run the jsre spacer there too.... IMO the spacer needs to be modifed to get it's potential... my 260 factory reed plate doesn't line up with the spacer. i would match whatever you are running so air flows smooothly through it... if there is a lip, which there is with a 260 plate ligning with some spacers you will loose rpm's on the big end, as i did. i thought it came out of the whole better.. just some facts i have experienced
those merc guys had it going on.... if i had a stock motor i wouldn't run one. i'm sure a guy will say it's awesome run one.... JMO never ran one on anything else besides 260's and drags.

I have one on a (nearly) stock 2.4 200, (tight heads), and on my setup, it is an add on that you can really "feel" by the seat of your pants, (or bathing suit)

It only takes a slight bit of pedal to make you feel the extra acceleration.

Not sure if it makes a difference at WFO, but the mid for sure.

(QUOTE)"seems like it would be just that much farther for air to travel?" (QUOTE)

I think what it does is allow the air flow to "straighten out" and therefore flow faster?

A spacer IZ one ov tha only bolton's U kan feel, and not imagine ya feel it!!...I build my own, and I have a few ov them out ther wit differnt frenz, and I have not put them on NUTT'IN, that it didn't make an improvement...It'z a Low/mid range inhanser, but it don't do much(if any) for top end!!...On sum motas, a 2" spacer works better than a 1"!!!

Distance aint as big a deal as velocity, I thought it helped speed up the intake charge. But I have been known to be wrong before.

I thank Ya juss may be on ta sumpth'in!!:D

it ain't tha distance, it IZ tha airspeed(velosity)...

I have exsperimented wit differnt size spacers on stock fish'in motas, az well az hi'r rpm mota'z, and they all kinna have differnt personalities...

A stock 2fo wit wh-31's likes a 1-1/4"....@ 1-1/2", it adds nuth'in, same wit 2"...

A 260 horn motaLikes a 1-3/4", with tha 2" bein tha same az 1-3/4"...

Stock 2.5 200, carb mota(wmv carbs) likes tha full 2" spacer...U see improvement thruout tha whole range(I add 1/4" at a time over 1")...

Tha spacers are eazy to make, it's juss a pain keep'in up wit tha differnt bolt sizes and make'in linkage!!

Merc used to have one in the accesory catalog, kinda like what Jay does with the angle cutting on horn motors. Hard to believe 1&6 get any air.

:iagree::iagree:........If ya look at flow only.......But them far off cyl's iz take'in what they want, an don't ker wher it kumz from!!.....dats why tha SVS works betta than a horn!!

I thought the Drag engines had a spacer with SVS? What ya figure is the way to go with a 2.4 BP horn, all round lake motor runin to72-7300rpm? Some say SVS may not be the way to go.
She got the camera as well:eek::cheers:

I install the JSRE 1" spacer on EVERY 2.5 horned motor I modify...( 280, 260s ) They will wake uo the bottom and mid range. I find this improvement is futher enhanced with my angle cuts to the reed plates as well as the rear of the horn opening. Normal application will pick up 250 - 350 rpms with no other mods. I have built many for pro max and 7 petal carbed guys and they love em...

Waterwings, thanks for the photos. This is interesting. A modification that increases drivability with no loss of dependability!
