If you're looking at different motors and want speed, the 300X is the way to go. I think there are several 28 Skaters running 300X's in the high teens and even 120+ MPH.

I took a test drive in a 250XS powered Skater 2 summers ago. We ran it up to 92, but the owner said he sees 96. He said it would probably hit 100 if he moved the motors up a notch on the transom.

i know there have been a couple done that way...call peter at Skater and he will give you the skinny.....the way i look at it is that they used to run decent with 2.5 260s which were 260hp and turned high RPM....the 250s have more Torque than the 260s but dont spin the rpm but you can swing a bigger brop with the additional torque so i would guess that set up properly they should be about 100-105mph considering the 300xs boats go about 115......

The 260s would out acellerate the 300s i would guess.i drove a 28 with tripple 260s one time, it punched real good and ran 121mph,but the twin 21 i own now would crush it fom a dead stop..The 2.5s were the motors to put on a skater if it was mine, sound and punch are way funner then the few mph the 300s might have over them..

This so far off base i had to respond..... I run 250 powerheads on my 24 skater.... The powerheads have stock porting.... They do have bolt ons and bumped limiters... I run with a lot of 2.5's down here and my boat used to have drags.... The 3.0 liters accelerate much better than a 2.5(40 to 100).... example i can run 32's and my father(24 skater 280ros's) will run 30's and i will lay about 6 boats on hime before it levels out.... A triple boat is a completely different animal...
shesha the powerheads will be fine but if you are running standard fishing mids they WILL break on the back of these boats.... A cat especially a true cat without a center pod beats the hell out of the mids and standard mids won't hold up... I run 15" Mad efi mids on mine

Shaun i would have never thought that,i just figured the 2.5 would of tore it up,live and learn.

There's no replacement for displacement!

I had both ROS 280's (with 8200 Rpm boxes) and 300x motors on my 28. The "x motors" out accelerated the 2.5's and had more top end to boot. In addition because you weren't forced to "fly" the boat for speed it was much more controlled after the conversion.
By the way the boat picked up 4 to 5 MPH on top end.
300x motors...not 300xs's....... or perhaps some of the modified big blocks...by the right builder........ are the best bang for your buck.

I opted for a standard 250 block because they are cheap and can be upgraded while still getting 300+ hard hours out of them not the standard 2.5 100-150 hours... plus no nicasil to deal with which cuts down on cost

I just figured they would not have as much punch,on my 21 skater it isnt gonna matter ,cause the 2.5s on it are gonna run away from the 300s from the get go.Hey Shaun how did the skater run with the drags, and did they have tight heads on?
