Setting max timing on a 99 225ho Johnson

OK, the manual calls for using a test prop... yeah right, my local brp dealer doesn't have a clue- never even heard of it.:nonod:

So, I figure I'd ask how everyone else sets max timing on thier OMCs. I've done mercs before- I tried checking the omc using the old merc method of pulling plugs and cranking with the timing at max advance... this cannot be right, as its too advanced under the timing light.:rolleyes:

This thing runs awesome and it still has the factory paint on the max timing screw, so I know its never been touched... I just don't feel right doing a tune up without checking and setting the timing:cheers:

You need to use a test wheel or a small pitch wheel tie it to your trailer , set your parking brake and wind it up you need to get atleast 5000 rpm .

Yeah... anyone got a test wheel around NW Ohio? Or wanna let me borrow one, I'd cover shipping:)

I've been thinking about this... the quick start feature is probably what throws the timing way off while I was trying the merc method... I figure it advances it quite a bit.

You can check timing without a test prop,I just don't want to try to explain how in print,if you still need help tomorrow,call chris 305 394 3354

The quickstart deactivates once the engine is warmed up or over a minimum rpm, around 2000 rpm IIRC.
Take it to the lake, back it down so the water pump is covered. Start the engine, let it warm up then check your timing. Run in gear with your prop on. Don't need a test prop or any other prop. I would recommend disconnecting the throttle cable and manually activating the throttle at the engine.
Probably scare the hell out of you the first time!
As long as you reach around 5K rpm the timing will be correct.
