Think I have a 2.4 XR4 engine. Years ago Mercury taught us to identify engine by stamp on mid-section or on crank case behind throttle arm. Appears to have vertical reeds and 41 carbs. Engine was off sponsored profess. bass boat. Stamped XX on mid-sect. above exhaust. You think engine is mod. any from factory before I disasemble. Just Curious whether to build this engine to make more power by porting and using horizonal reeds or building a 2.5 to make power. Thanks 175sf

It soundz like a std steel bore 2.4...Tha xr4 wuz slightly modified from tha factory, and made around 160-165 HP...

If U have a 2.5, build it...Theres nuth'in reel special about a XR4, it's basically a stout 150...It takes more than juss a horz front to make it anythang special...Tha behind tha liner layout iz much more effecient...JMO

Thanks for the info. Will build the 2.5, have already cut and polished the exhaust. Talked to Jay Smith about TDR reeds. Any particular carbs you recommend. Have a set of 200 carbs come off a late 2.4.
