Here we go....
I just finished rebuilding the powerhead of my 2.4 225 (1980). The thing runs perfectly. BUTTT, It will not charge. The voltage shows only what the battery has 12.6 ,or so even at higher rpm ther is no change. I ohms tested the stator= 0.8. the rectifier is testing out ok also if I follow the manual. But it is a little mushy and one of the leads looked like it got slightly hot. it had a little of the black stuff stuck to it.
I did change the flywheel out from a 2.0 135 and I hooked up one of power trim positive leads to the (+) rectifier termanal (I have since removed it) could that be the issue? I am no electronics expert so any help would be great.

Need to get this fixed before oct 18th!!!

Make sure the red terminal on the rectifier goes to the pos side of the battery, commonly by putting a wire from the + on the rectifier to the pos side of the starter solenoid. They are rather cheap so just replace it.

I have 12v at the "+" termanal with the engine off. But when the motor is running I have nothing. is that normal?
should I run another jumper wire directly to the positive side of the rectifier to the pos side of the soilnoid to test it and can I test the stator while the motor is running to see if it its throwing voiltage into the rectifier?
I would like to test a couple more things before I get a new rectifier and find out it was a bad connection or something miswired.

It appears to be the rectifier. I rechecked it this morning and I am getting continuity off the termanals when I reverse the meter leads. there should be none, I will pick one up today and update.

I changed the rectifier. Charging now!!But, I am getting 16.4 V at 3000 rpm. It seems to top out there, But I think that is a little high. Right?
I don't want to start fring stuf so any suggestions on a voltage regulator? This system never had one.

that sounds normal to me. as I recall I think every one I tested had high voltage.

The inline on my Formula shows near 17 volts, been that way for years. Just check your battery water level routinely, you'll be fine.

Well if thats normal, it means I have actully finished this project.(Of course you are never "done" with anything when it comes to a boat) and with a few more hours of break-in I will be all set. Now I just have to start working on the right set up to get more top end out of this rig.
SEE YOU IN OCTOBER!!!
