with SEI lower units and outdrives. Sounds too good to be true.

If you do a search you will see a number of comments, most good. I wouldn't hesitate to buy another.

from what i found when looking ( couple months ago ) they work great for general riding and work duty, but werent so great when ran in a surfact piercing application. Once again, I have no factual info as I ended up getting a CLE instead, but that was just what I found through the searches I did.

Correct me if I am wrong, but I don't think they advertise and sell anything for "high performance" use.

You are right, nothing is listed as high performance to my knowledge! My only point was that a stock case can be ran on the surface, where as these (supposedly) can not. And again, I have zero first hand experience with these, I was just trying to save the op some tw by posting what I found in my searches! They seem like a great choice for a fishing boat or something though!!

Hey Hawk,
Go say "Hi" to my sis for me, she lives in BR too.
I'm thinking if you were to take a new (under warranty) standard Mercury lower unit and had a "Bob's" LWP installed so you could run surfacing propellers for example, that the lower unit would at that time become your responsibility, voiding any warranty from Mercury. So with that being said, SDI is kind of saying the same thing, 'eh? :D

I've been running a lower on a merc alpha outdrive behind a healthy 383 for over a year now... and I'm kinda hard on things. It's seen close to 6000 rpms and has outlived two uppers so far... threw an upper driveshaft / yoke on one and recently fried the gears on the other. I bought an upper from sei to replace the merc. Shifts fine, works well. If you only do a lower, go ahead and replace the water pump at the outset, and just realize that the paint doesn't hold up as well as merc...
