you guys, [like me], who operate in salt water...

what do you do at the end of your boating day to your remote box, [throttle and shift cable quadrant, and start key and choke], to keep it protected?

after flushing my motor, i usually mist it down with wd40, [i buy it by the gallon a "big orange racing supply"], and i've also been doing that to the quadrant as well, spraying down between the throttle and shift levers. i try not to hose down that area too much with water, because i don't want to short out the starter and choke wiring.

that said, i've only been into boating for a little over a year, and i just made up that technique, so i don't know if it's effective or not. heck, it might even be bad for the electronics in there. what do you all think?

I just use soap and water. I take the control apart about once per year, clean and lube. Don't do anything like WD 40 on the ign switch, choke etc. I use CRC Don't use WD 40.

thanks, jeff. question about CRC. afaict, CRC makes a lot of different products. are you referring to CRC electrical contact cleaner, or some kind of CRC light oil that you mist onto things you don't want corroded?

Try not to spray wd-40, or most any other lube on the wiring and or spark plug wires. Have seen real problems on some wires. Causes wire insulation to swell and crack. Yamahas seem to be the most vulnerable to this....I have been using corrosion x thick formula on the motor end. Use sparingly and cover electronics and wires to prevent contact. Spray some in a cup and paint rusted bolt hds. etc. with a brush...Water proof grease on the controll cable ends....That should help stop corrosion. Use a spray bottle to rinse away salt instead of hose. Easier to controll. Hope this helps.

I use CRC 656 multi purpose lube. Years ago WD-40 would cause wiring to fail where the CRC seemed OK. I have never sprayed an ignition switch, choke switch etc.
