View Full Version : Hot Foot & Side Throttle Together?

Has anyone run a hotfoot and a side throttle/shifter together? There are times when I like the side throttle like cruising and times when I like to keep both hands on the wheel and use the hotfoot like when going fast.
If I could find a really short control cable I was thinking that I could engineer some sort of coupler to couple the 2 cables from the hotfoot and side control into one that goes to the motor.
Setup is a Merc with standard control cables.

Land & Sea’s Dual-Action Foot Throttle has been around for a long time, and does just what you're thinking. It can be used in conjunction with the outboard’s original hand controls and the dual-action feature helps maintain constant speed without constant pressure on the foot pedal.
it doesn't really allow for the hand throttle to operate "overiding" the foot throttle, though, because the cable has to drive the throttle linkage at the engine as well as the spring on the foot throttle.

That sounds exactly like what I am looking for!
Thanks Jimboat!

In Control also sells a combo unit I believe

Land and Sea dual-action foot throttles come around all the time here used. I bought mine here as a used piece several years ago.
It's very nice when you're idling around the docks and you need to jab the throttle to avoid bumping something. Otherwise, I rarely use the (secondary) hand throttle, other than for shifting.

i have had one since 91. i have not had any trouble with it. its nice to have two hands to run trim, jack plate, or tabs. i also like it for long runs, set throttle at what rpm you want and have you still have the option to add throttle as needed. and its great to have both hands on wheel wide open.

And that is exactly why I want one. I am running an ad on the "Parts Wanted" forum. When I get one I will have a Hotfoot and Billet Shifter for sale.

Do me a favor and if you find a source for an alternative or if you wind up with more than one used one, please let me know. I've beem looking for exactly the same thing (didn't want to post over the top of yours on the other page). I like running with the hand throttle when pulling skiers, etc... but then when alone and running faster, I really need both hands on the wheel...
Thanks!

wca - it looks like I will go with the InControl option - new - as I have had no bites on getting a used unit. I don't mind spending the $400 as it is going in a 2006 boat with a 2007 motor. I just have to sell my old boat 1st. And thanks for not posting over me on the other page.

If I don't run across something else first, I'll probably bite the bullet and do the incontrol thing next year... just can't bring myself to spend that much on it right now. especially since I been buying boat stuff a little too often lately... let me know how it works out for you... cheers! Tim

I added a hand throttle option to a Hot Foot several years ago. Here are a couple pictures of how it worked. The hand portion has to be able to allow the foot portion to operate independant but the foot portion will only close as far as the hand portion is positioned.

Thanks. I sent them an email and will await the response. I believe with the InControl combo unit it is designed only for Mercury. The unit that Sjöberg Racing carries in Europe looks like it might work with all types of outboards. If any board members happen to recognize Sjöberg Racing and what they do please let us know.

I ordered the In Control unit from Diamond Marine. I ordered the one that hooks up to the hand throttle. I'll keep you posted.

Keep us posted.
I emailed Sjöberg Racing on there combo unit. At first they replied right back to my email asking me several questions. I answered them, and then tried to give them a ring in Sweden. It was strange as they went dark on my email and there was no way to leave a message for them via phone.

My InControl unit arrived today. It looks like a very well engineered product but the installation instructions leave me with quite a few questions. I am going to start a new thread and hopefully snag someone who as installed one and pick his brain. I won't be doing this until the winter as boating season down here lasts a long time - which is why I live down here.
