where can i get some good info on proper set back for my 21 ft. tallon w/ 2.5 carb. engine. Right now I have no set back plate, only hyd. jack plate. I can not seem to get enough bow lift. I need to trim out all the way to even get close. Tried several props, and found merc. 28 chopper (big ear) works best. 7200 r.p.m. 79 m.p.h. I hope I can do better than this .Any help on where to locate one, and which to use would be greatly appreciated!

If no one answers this send Talon2.5 an e-mail. He has a 21' Talon with a 2.5 on his. He will be able to tell you how to set it up.:)

trying to reply, get error messages

ok now i can edit this hopefully...........

first off, where is the gas tank in that boat? in the center under the floor? is there any gear up front? battery and pumps in the rear?

mine is the 18 footer, but set-up is a tricky thing, actually i'm suprised no one replied yet

move as much to the rear as you can, this will help change the CG (center of gravity) the 21 has the driver and passenger seat further forward than the other talons they built, so right away your fighting your own wieght up front

if everything is already towards the back and/or under the rear deck area, a few things come to mind..........

1, the prop you liked, take it to a prop shop and get more cup added to it, and have the cup put in a little into the leading edge at the tips, this will aid in "holding" the bow up, if ya have to trim till it's too high and it not working for ya, it needs cup

2, bobs machine sells 2 inch spacer plates that go between the motor and the jackplate you can get them through rickracer here on S&F his number is (407) 343-4733, he can also get a setback plate setup for you

3, giving the seating situation in the 21 talon, you may actually have to bolt a manual jackplate to the hydraulic one, and hieght of the jackplate plays alot in this game but you didnt say where your propshaft is in relation to the bottom of the center pod, moving the engine back will change the arm on the CG and may help raise the bow, but it will be a testing process as to how far back to get it to work

your fighting design of the hull on this one and although setback will change the CG the hull may not work with you on the change, it may come down to hieght and prop cup and as much wieght in the back as possible to offset the forward style cockpit on the 21

just my initial thoughts on this ;)

heres a newsprint article talon sent me a few years back, notice in the pic how high the motor is trimmed yet it still isnt airing out and notice the distance from the passenger to the engine, setback may help this but it may suprise you that changing the CG may actually add 20 some inches to the setback to get it to work, and thats if the hull design will let it work, naturally as you go further back it's gonna stress the transom, so after you get the desired effect from setback trials you will have to brace the transom to stop future stress problems

i think cup in the prop to hold the trim and a start of 12 inches of setback may be the way to start
