Post all your favorite pictures, videos and stories of new and old. Anything goes, from Grandpa's trusty 5 horse to the baddest race motors. Every motor and every picture has a story. No bashing please.
I have many pictures I would like to post, but I would like to kick it off with some recent shots of the present and future of Evinrude outboards. My wife and I recently had the privilege of riding in a modern ETEC powered race boat out to Blarneys Island for the races. I had seen them run well before, but the experience of being in the boat was truely amazing. Smooth, Quiet, responsive and very quick. As an Evinrude fan, I am proud of the company putting out a quality product again. The two boats pictured below are very competitive with the other outboards and are emissions friendly to boot.
Happy 100th Evinrude!!!

Here's a few shots of my 1985 40hp short shaft tiller, manual start! Found hiding at a small dealer in the sticks, hiding on the used motor rack back in storage. Got it for a song, run it on my 16ft fishin boat. Turns a 15inch pitch SST, was a "donation" from my Dad. I get 31-32mph all day with me and wife.

A pattern maker by trade, Ole Evinrude finished his first outboard motor in 1907 And even to this day, outboard motors are basically the same: using Ole’s idea of a vertical crankshaft, horizontal flywheels, and set of bevel gears. Today Evinrude motors will propel a boat a bit faster than the ’07 version (150 mph versus 5 mph).
THE STORY, DID YOU KNOW?
Invention: outboard motor in 1907
Definition: A detachable internal-combustion engine mounted on outboard brackets or on the stern of a boat
Patent: 1,001,260 (US) issued August 22, 1911
Inventor: Ole Evinrude
Criteria: First practical. Modern prototype. Entrepreneur.
Birth: April 19, 1877 in Oslo, Norway
Death: July 12, 1934
Nationality: American (of Norwegian descent)
Milestones:
1877 Ole Evinrude born April 19, 1877 in Oslo, Norway
1882 Evinrude family moves to American and settles in Cambridge, Wisconsin
1905 Cameron Waterman invents and files patent application for a Boat-Propelling Device
1906 after Ole made a 5-mile roundtrip by rowboat he formed his idea for a practical boat motor
1907 the first field tests of Evinrude's outboard motor, a 1 1/2 horsepower, 62-pound iron engine
1907 U.S. Patent No. 851,389 issued April 23, assigned to Waterman Marine Motor Co.
1910 Ole filed patent application for Marine Propulsion Mechanism on September 10
1911 Ole formed a business partnership with a tugboat magnate named Chris Meyer
1911 U.S. Patent No. 1,001,260 issued August 22, assigned to Evinrude Motor Co,
1914 Ole sells his half interest in Evinrude Motor Co to Meyer, in order to take a vacation
1919 Ole designs a twin-cylinder, 3-horsepower, 48-pound, aluminum outboard motor.
1919 Ole forms "Elto" Company to compete with the Meyer's Evinrude Company
1922 Johnson Motors established, specialist in inboard motors and speedboats
1929 a three-way merger formed Outboard Marine Corporation, Evinrude reacquired his first company
1932 OMC began to expand, producing, for example, "Evinrude Lawn-Boy" power lawnmowers
1934 Ole Evinrude passed away (1 year after his wife) and his son Ralph inherited the presidency
1936, OMC renamed Outboard Marine & Manufacturing Company after acquiring Johnson Outboards
outboard motor, boat motor, evinrude, motor boat, Ole Evinrude, Chris Meyer, Ralph Evinrude, invention, history, inventor of, history of, who invented, invention of, fascinating facts.

Heres a little diplay we have at the shop... The center motor is a 1941 Evinrude Ranger (runs) and the outside motors are mid fifties sportwin and fleetwin (both run). The motor crate is from the early 20's (i think, way before my time). The motor on the left (sportwin) my great grandfather sold new to an elderly man in 54'. He used it for a few short years then passed away. The motor sat for many years in his sons garage, his son then decide to give it to us since he had no used for it. The motor is mint and all original.

to have some sort of fuel related issue w/ the engine(i ran it for 40 mins, go to slow down, engine dies and won't restart, almost wash up on some rocks rite before the anchor hooks!!!), anyway, got the engine restarted after holding my hand over the carb throats while cranking(primer bulb is hard, enrichener does no good, spark is good), so what are you all cheering about??
OK, we can get the cheerleaders out now..

My pic..Johnson made them also. Best to search Craigslist..2hp "Mate" on Rude, not sure what the Johnny's were called off hand. Try the Seattle site..there was a pristene on (Johnny)..a few days back..$200 firm..(worth it). Far as I know, came in 15, 20, and 25 L/S..(sailboat). Guy behind me had a L/S I worked on, and its now history..sold. Its a hot item out here, Puget Sound area..small Sailboat motor. I sold the one in the pic..reluctantly, that was a 72, but I still have a 71. The 72 was so salted from.."stupid"..I could not get the prop off. But engine wise, was fine. Just needed a carb kit. Paid $100, sold $150, and also told him the salt thing..I B/S nobody.
Damn motors weigh 31 pounds. Gas self contained. Oars weigh close, way longer, and less WORK! I stick mine in the Flatbottom, in the bow, if I will go out messing around, a little too far from the homebase Marina. Just enough room, off the IL6 transom, for a "get home". One never knows. Always "prepared!
Shipping would be dirt cheap, as its light, and small, so check out Craigs, do a search.
PM me, with you addy, and if I spot one, let ya know..
Also, the impeller, on the original, don't mess a new one. Its a bigger thick blade, they toast over the years, age. ..(fat solid blades age, and crack..new is really flexy, smaller, but work fine.Theres an upgrade kit, all new housings, bolt right up. $40. Don't have the P/N upgrade at hand, but "Laings Outboards"..goggle it..in Fla..super people, great guy, has ALL PARTS...and does all the old school, smaller Johnny/Rude..(and more) stuff.
If I also catch one searching, I'll post it here too..(they just don't make them like that anymore!..Too bad too..great little motors!)

Yep!...we here , lower Puget Sound, get twice daily, anywhere at times, 18 feet tides swings. Ya NEVER .."fight the tide"..Jeezz..yesterday ya could "wakeboard"..with just a rope off the man dock!

HA! I picked up a 7 1/2 close to same year Johnny. A trashed rod was coat hanger wired to the tiller. No sign of a piston. When I got around to looking at it, seems all together though, but froze up. Ripped it down, and seems they just took the rod out, PUT THE PISTON BACK IN:eek:, and probably tried to run as a 3 1/4 hp? Amazing!

As done a lot of messing the old stuff, make sure to check the rods for wear. Crank usually OK, and "think", rollers B/E..not sure off hand, but the small end was a bushing, and found many over the years, that when ya cranked it around, and the pistons are now being "pulled back down", shove them back, see if slop. Great little motors, them and the Johnnys. Only problem is parts, as the old TN's/TD's (Johhnys), the 5.5, and then the 10hp Rudes and J's, kinda told people to get either/or...get the bigger..7/2 kinda never made it.
Had (spoke of before), I think was a 57 ? Johnny 7.5. Had a hard time Ebaying the good parts..simply not needed. Still might have some gearcase parts here, and more...(look winter...)
Is that a full gearshift?, or a "spinner"? Keep an eye out for a 15hp "Fastwin, 50's. SUPER MOTORS, as the Johnny 18hp "Holiday Bronze". motors. Those pups are FOREVER!
Also parts available, the old stuff. Dude in FLA..search .."Laings Outboards". Super guy, knows his stuff.

That would have been the Speedifour...another one of their greats. I never thought I would have much interest in the big four cylinder opposed motors from an antique standpoint, because I didn't think a powerful four cylinder motor would seem very archaic. Boy, was I wrong. Since we got the Big Four, I realized it is the best of all worlds. The simple design of opposed cylinders and forward-only gearcase, with a primitive roar and enough power for slalom skiing.

The hull is a 1978 Pacecraft 15'. Basically a 15' Allison bottom with a cutout in the rear of the pad like a Hydrostream, and a different deck. Pacecraft bought the molds from Vampire. The hull is about 400 lbs.
It will just barely flirt with 40 on the speedo with driver only, and 37-38 with two people. I have slalom skied behind it, but had to start on two. With a work wheel I think I could get up on slalom. It's 60 cubic inches with 30 of them firing at a time, but the rotary valve just doesn't have the instant snap that a reed valve motor has out of the hole. Plus, coordinating the takeoff with a skier takes a real captain. You have to start with the skier out to the side. The gearcase is forward only, so as soon as it starts you have to get the timing to full advance and twist the throttle to full open so that it gets underway before too much tension comes up on the rope. But once it's up and running I can cut as hard as I want on my 65" Connelly Concept.
Anyway, thought it would be a good tribute to Evinrude since it's what got us across the Rhine.

They went on sale to racers in April 1965. Evil insiders had them about 6 months sooner

Just barely. He was certainly an adult and had "left the farm" by the time they started producing motors specifically for racing.

Ah..come on..WHO cares WHO started it, or what...as those, LONG ago...just simply did IT...and we improved, on the design...and still at it to the day. "Facts", mean nothing to me..just glad someone "started it..and had a great time.."Hey, watch this!..hold my beer"..:thumbsup:

Evinrude #843 from 1910.
Lower unit is newer because it has a skeg - maybe from the mid teens.
