Is it possible to put west systems over gel coat? I thought to wipe it down with acetone or 202 lightly sanding keeping the gel coat and metal flake. Will this stick? I filled 9 holes in the transom with dowel rods soaked in epoxy and want a protective coat. I know nothing about fiberglass and yes the transom is more than likely a bit wet. I dont have the money to replace and just want a little more water protection. I have totally dried the transom to the best of my ability and it seems sound. Thanks Rick

The epoxy will yellow from the UV, you still need to put something over the top of it.

you can get a clear UV stable hardener from west system, it is used for woodwork.

How it will hold up as-is without another clearcoat over it I cant say for sure. You will also want to be carefull sanding the boat if it is a colored flake, once you sand the colored flakes they will turn silver. If the boat is silver flake or has some silver flake in the same area you should be ok.

Aft is that like barrier coat we use to grind out blisters and coat with barrier coat it stuck but was not transparent. I dont mind a little yellowing as long as I can brush it and feather it over the metal flake. Thanks Rick

so you will see the dowel rods through the clear or is there another plan?

no you got to shoot white over your dowels then clear it

he said his boat is metalflake, one would assume its a dark based metalflake boat. Pushing clear epoxied rods into holes and covering in clear will not be a good procedure for him to do. The rods will probably end up failing not too mention they wont look that great through the clear.

Unless I misunderstand his intentions?

I did the tips of the dowel rod in nail polish the same color as the gel coat. I know its not the right way to do it but im boating on a budget and this boat is better than what I got rid of:eek:I would like to cover the whole transom with some kind of clear sealer epoxy or what ever. Rick

Spray clear gelcoat mixed with duratec over it.

Rick gelcoat with duratec is trouble free.....can get it to come out of a Preval sprayer too. I have a ton of the stuff and can send you a sample pack (enough for transom) if you desire. PM addy....I'm not using it...it will just go bad.
