2.4 mariner 200 (carb). Idled at 1000 rpm's on the hose (800+/- rpm's in water). I replaced the ground wires on all six coils. Started my motor, motor is now idleing at 1500 rpms (on the hose). What caused the increase in rpm's.
The reason i did this- i'm not happy with my wot, motor is droping power like i'm loosing a stator or switch box(s)? Is it possible the gounds just needed to be changed?

I would appreciate any help?:)

Oh chit, it's now hitting on all 6. Quick cut a couple of the ground wires.

hope it helps

Ya, I know it's a stupid question, just wasn't expecting to see that!!!

Have you confirmed that it's an electrical issue, rather than fuel-related?

RPM's on the hose is not a reliable indicator of ANYTHING, since they tend to behave differently out of the water. The RPM change can be caused by something as simple as an air temperature change.

Get an OEM service manual. It's worth the price.

Yes it is. You'll notice that in almost all electrical diagnostic instructions, in the first paragraph it will say check/clean all grounds. This frequently overlooked step has led to the replacement of many good parts.

By the way my tach jumps around when the motor starts to act up at wot (only happens at wot), makes me believe its electrical?

That could be a dirty selector switch on the tach, being rattled by mechanical vibration.

If it runs off a rectifier, it might share grounding with the switchboxes, and that could affect both.

Check the crimps on all the terminals involved, in addition to cleaning and tightening them.

On post #2, you set it up so well, I just had to poke a little fun at you.:D

hope it helps
John

It may just be running better, increasing the rpm. May need to back off on the idle adjustmernt screw or back off the idle timing.

two of the ground wires were in bad shape. Thats what prompted me to change them all out. I just wasn't expecting to see that kind of jump in rpm's!!! I guess the best thing to do is go for a boat ride. I have a trip comming up and want it running strong. :)

If it's too wild for you, just cut the ground wires like I said.:D
