what is the difference between the left and right hand flywheels(except for the obvious) and how do you tell them apart? will the left work on a right hand motor? any info would be nice.

The center hub is timed different. You can swap it put but then you really need to balance it in my opinion if your gonna really twist it.

I'd have to go count mine to be sure, but seems like I remember the left hand having less teeth than the right. 'Course this could just pertain to year model, since the very first V6 flywheels had a few less teeth (and a different number on the starter bendix also) than the one a few years later that far as I know carries over until today. Some of my parts are REAL old, so it gets confusing.

Most lefties are attached with a YELLOW washer on top. Also as Raceman said the lefty have more teeth and the flywheel starter gear ring gear is .100" smaller in diameter than a rightie also the starter bendix is different as well as the starter rotation.. Also the starting and stopping firing magnets sleeve on the hub is not the same as far as their alignment on the center hub in retrospect with the key way.. To use the lefty on a rightie motor you would need to change the hub and the starting ring gear.. Be careful to make sure when you attach the new hub that the key way is pointing directly dead center at a SOUTH pole magnet ( one that attracts another magnet ) So may argue it doesn't matter but I have seen it DOES ...Thats the way ALL the High Per Flywheels are sent from the factory must be a reason why. All this info hold true for most of the older High Performance Mercury flywheels..

Good luck,
Jay

Jay you are correct except that in magnets opposite attract. You can't tell a S from a N without knowing the polarity of one of the magnets, so if you don't know the polarity of the magnet on the flywheel you wouldn't know N from S.

All I can CONFIRM with 100 % accuracy is that when the key way on the hub is pointing directly at the middle of the CORRECT magnet it WILL ATTRACT ANOTHER HAND HELD MAGNET and or repel another non magnet piece of carbon steel...... "Call" it north, south, east, or west or what ever ya choose...

Thanks Jeff,
