To make a OMC lower unit last ! 99 250 hp on a 96 lower. I have killed 3 so far ! Running close to surface , 28 chopper ,21 Titan (Talon) 6500rpm
So far ive chewed up 2 pinion gears and 1 drive shaft failure. Stock / pinned cases with bobs pick up's. Any tricks or advice to make one last.
Or do i need to just slow down and take it easy !

The newer model cases have the pinion held in place by a retainer clip. I have seen a few pinions go because of the clip not properly installed or just failing. The older cases had a screw through the side of the case that hold the pinion in place. I'm not sure why they went away from that. Otherwise, OMC cases can be finicky. I've had mine for 6 years and never damaged any internals besides a cracked bearing carrier. I have vibrated the hell out of the housings a few times from running too high engine height. I lowered my motor an inch and haven't had any issues with prop-slap or vibration. Lowering the motor only cost me about a mile an hour top end and greatly improved the overall performance on my boat.

Some guys have sufaced OMC cases for years and never had issues, some guys have just thrown in the towel and use Merc cases.

talk to Jenksam on here. I've read of a few people on here with good power, who have lowers from him with great luck. His makes on up in the 3XXhp range and lives. A lower from him is whats going to be going on mine.

If you are trying to rebuild yours you need to make sure the case is square with an alignment fixture the factory sells. Proper clearance and set up makes a big difference.

Thanks for the responce Racer , I'll check in to it. I think i just need to run it lower . My boat is likely to heavy for the way im trying to run. Got a lake boat and trying to make it run like a STV ! Sure is fun until stuff breaks!

I run my V8's pretty high, but then again I have Merc CLE's handling the wet work. :)

That's what I said too. ;) Slowing down was NOT an option. And my 8's are 380+hp and on a 7000# fishing boat.
