I have been reading some tech threads on inlines and noticed the carbs are not supposed to open until the distributor has advanced to a certain point. On mine, the carbs crack open a little as soon as the distributor moves, due to friction of the grease in the mechanism I suppose. I THINK the butterfly return springs on the carbs are supposed to overcome this? Are the springs weak from age or what? The motor hasn't been in the water since I got it but it will be soon.

If the carbs start to open as soon as the distributor moves you're gonna have bog issues. I've actually always opened mine LATER than what the books say. Although it's hard to adjust to, I like my timing all in before the carbs move. (Jeff_G disagrees with me on this) At the very least you need a good bit of timing advance before crackin' the throats.

So how do I make 'em stop? the actual stop adjustment isn't contacting the advance mech, the friction of the advance moving inside the throttle collar is causing them to crack open. Can I just put a light return spring on the throttle collar to keep 'em closed until it hits the advance stop?

The top carb should have a larger, stiffer return spring than the other two. It sounds also like the grease in the distributor has hardened. You might consider taking the distributor off and rebuilding it with new bearings and snap ring. Everything should move easily and not open the throttles until the primary pickup contacts the throttle lever.
