Here are a couple shots of a 500 Restoration I just completed. This will be cruising the Ottawa River on a 1962 Restored Crown Jewel.

She's a beauty.

:iagree:

Its a beauty no matter what it is

Dave I thought the 1959 model was a Mk58A and the first Merc 500 was 1963???

Sam,

ME too:confused: Everything is matching on this motor. It was all White, serial numbers match the housing and it also has the bolt on Tuner and it has no block designation on the side, like super thunderbolt or otherwise. I would have guessed a replacement block if the serial number was not on the block. I am thinking special order motor since it is a long-shaft or someone stamped the block after replacing the powerhead and faceplate.

Don't worry what it is, it's all good. I like the red/white. This motor will make 'em talk at the shows. Decals:
Bob Shapton makes some really nice decals and faceplate emblems for this motor if you don't have 'em. http://www.iserv.net/~shapton/

How is the lower unit different from the 61 500? Looks the same as my 61 450. I know that later replacement lowerunits for the non-jet prop engines had more angular skeg and straight lines joining the gearcase to the lowerunit.
The merc 500 I believe had black between the chrome ridges on on the wraparound cowl.
Nice job Dave.

This is not a mixture of parts, The only difference in the 500 gearcase is the long skeg and the Tapered roller bearing on the foward gear instead of Ball bearing other than that they are the same. This motor had the different case BUT it had a large crack from freezing. So I changed it over.

The faceplate did not have the screw in hold down, but the push and turn knob as on the motor.

Sam, you may be right, The number I thought was a 2 is actually a 4, so it is newer. But anyhow, the customer is completely 100% satisfied, he saw it before we started, this is what he wanted and after all they pay the bills.

Regards,

Dave

I'm ASKIN'.............. for my own information.

Weren't ALL of the '59 motors still Marks instead of Mercs? I've got a Mark 78A and also a Mark 58A, and always thought that the A designation was '59 only, and that '59 was the last year of the Marks and the Mercs started in '60.

Weren't ALL '59 motors all white instead of also having various top/bottom cowl colors available?

Here's my latest. It's very original and doesn't look like it's ever been within a mile of salt. Seems like a shame to take it apart, but I'm probably gonna' test compression, etc and then at least do a cosmetic resto. Picture is from previous owner. I'll take some closer ones next week.

I think there were a few color options available on the 59's, but it may have been that they were close to left over 58's.

Yes, 59's are Marks, the Merc x00's started in 1960.
