I am messing around with the timing on my 175 SJ. Bought the boat used and just want to verify it is correct. I have the service manual and I got the Max timing adjustment no problem but I am having trouble with the primary pickup timing.
The manual says "Crank engine with starter and adjust throttle primary pickup screw to align specified throttle primary pickup mark on timing decal with timing pointer".
My question is where is the throttle primary pickup mark. The marks on the flywheel are from 40 deg BTDC to 20 Deg ATDC and the .462" mark for positioning the timing pointer. I cant find any other marks anywhere. Possible that it is just a specified number of degrees BTDC but I can't find that info anywhere either. Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks

What the manual is telling you to do is set the carb pickups at a specific timing advance position. The mark you're looking for is on the carb linkage itself, and on the older stuff lines up with a casting on the block, but I can't remember about the newer stuff, whether it's the same or not. If nobody else answers during the day I'll look at mine tonight. The critical thing here is that the carbs don't begin to open too early in relation to timing advance. If there was the other way.......... too much timing before the carbs started to open it'd be fine, but carbs in early makes the acceleration lazy and boggy. The most important thing of course is the total timing advance.

I usta' rememeber all this stuff off the top of my head, but the ole' sayin' about the mind bein' the first thing to go..............:o

i believe the idle timing is 8d atdc and make sure you have the idle advance modual unplugged for all timing adjustments.
