ok whats new.... 90hp evinrude 1985
i have one cylinder with fire
where should i start? i'm going out for the rest of the day i figure i'll pick up a multimeter. does any one know what wire and how many ohms i should be checking for?

You can swap the other three coils in place of the working one as your first test. Other significant components you will need to test are: both power packs, the timer base and the stator. All are pretty pricey items, so you really want to properly diagnose which is the bad component. A factory service manual is really helpful when you get into ignition problems.

i have a SELOC manual
if one cylinder fires wouldn't that mean the timer base,stator and that side power pack is good? or can i still have fire and those parts be bad?
so far my manual as far as testing parts isn't very good.
one test says set the meter to "S" and "5"
what the F* is "s" and "5"???
i don't even have that on my meter.
can some one tell me how to test the parts with my multi meter?

your voltage from the stator should be 150vt your trigger ohms should be 35-35. Just because you have spark on one cylinder does not mean your trigger is good it could have one side grounding out. Check your grounds on your coils and power packs. If you have a dual post coils check the primer wire plug side the orange wire . That plug gets any corrosion on it ,it will cause that clyinder not to spark.

S and 5 are settings on the Stevens meter CD-77. Stands for sensor and 5V. To properly diagnose the system you need the proper equipment, or you are just guessing. You need a peak reading voltmeter or a voltmeter like many of the Fluke models with a peak reading adapter.
If you don't have the knowledge, and tools you would be better off taking it to a shop that knows. Parts changing gets real expensive real fast.

no way, there are 2 shops here. the guy the owens one rents a house off my farther. he's a f'n Idiot! the other shop isn't too bright either.
trust me i'm better off on my own.
i took my 24' to my father's renters once. 1st they said i need a new fuel pump, so i bought a pump i think it was 12psi for a 650 cfm webber
it was a universal pump for like $50 at the local auto part store.
i put it all on so it looked nice an neat. and still no fuel to the cylinders.
they said, oh you have to use a "Marine" pump. so i spend the $300 for a mercruiser "marine" pump. well what do yah know that one didn't work any better then the $50 that i had bought previously.
then they said i need a new carb or rebuild mine. so i went to summit racing and bought a 650 cfm edelbrock it's the same as a webber identical! that didn't work so i spend an other $300 for them to rebuild mine. and that didn't work either!!
you know what the problem was the whole f'n time?
the boat was no level on the trailer the end of the trailer was on the ground. closing off the fuel in the carbs!
shows how much the marine machanics here know. f'n idiots!
the more i work on parts my self the more i learn.
any way, i have fire on all 4 cylinders now. the stator had some cracks in it and wasn't very clean. oddly i put one on from an other motor and showing metal sections are painted. but it's not cracked. seems to have been the culprit
i do have a power pack that is cracked and the spark jumps so. i'm ordering one tomorrow.
my buddy pointed out i had the wrong meter. i didn't realize there where different ones.:thumbsup:
