It is nice to see someone here getting razzed about GOOD customer service, rather than the multitudes of "I got screwed" threads on here.

Jay is one of the few anymore that realizes there are plenty of opportunities on the "High Road" and nothing but potholes on the "low road".

Are these rebuilds of someones rebuilds or?

Jay Smith
07-18-2009, 08:29 AM
In a "nutshell":

I received these engines (2- 280 ROS ) that had sleeve damage ( both ) , I was contracted by the owner to repair and modify as all motors that come here ,I sent the blocks to Ruck to repair damaged sleeves and while the blocks were at Rucks I was doing machine work on all parts left behind so when blocks arrived back I could in a matter of 1 1/2 days ship complete running power heads back I did my normal mods to rotating assembly ( Lightening , weight matching rods/pistons and porting pistons, also installed encapsolated light weight wrist pins for weight advantage and "stuffing" ability to increase crankcase pressure to enhance bottom ) front half epoxying and tightening to try and increase torque , horn, and reed plates angle cuts . These are NORMAL things I do just like any other V-6 Merc. that I build and modify. I was instructed by the owner to do everything I could to enhance bottom end as I did all in my power to do so ... Hopefully the customers will be pleased with the end results I did all I could do to full fill his requests,to get his engines repaired, modified and back so he could get back on the water as his boating season is abrevated in the region where he lives....

Have a great weekend,
Jay

Yea Jay has been so so easy to work with its nuts! He took two of my motors that were all but stock but the porting was higher than a drap motor.:mad: Motors had zero down low, in my 25' cat and 5 guys in it, took and day and night to get on plane! Just sucked, when stock they would jump out of the hole. That is why i put tight heads on it and did not run enuff fuel and took two holes out. So like Jay said we did what we could to get some bottom back. And the time it took him to do it was NUTS!! :) :) Motors will be on my boat this coming week!! And back on the water!!:thumbsup::thumbsup: Will post how they run after break in! But i have a great feeling they will be much better down low!

Thank you so much Jay!

The ones you ran with incredibly high compression?

Yes they were. I told them i did not want to lose any bottom end it is a river boat. I was told over and over i would lose nothing any where just gain. Well frist time out in boat i was sick, it was slower than 80wt oil at -20deg trying to get on plane. Mid was good top end was great!! I knew it was porting the hole time then i find out from Ruck that the exhaust ports are higher than a drag block!:mad: I went to tight heads to get some bottom end back, my bad on not running race fuel and boom.

That saved the day, they were found today and will have them tonight with any luck! Jay even faxed me a copy of what he put on the crates! Jay has all so called me like 3 times asking if they were found, like they were his own motors and was very concerned. :) :) :)

Matt , Glad you got your motors last night after a 6 HOUR round trip to their terminal... I have came to the conclusion that besides an X wife the most herindious LIARS on the planet are freight carries...They have NEVER came on time or even the day they claim they are dropping or picking up at JSRE....

BTW: I ALWAYS attach a large label , glue as well as STAPLE it to the top of the box IMO any responsable shipper would... People that rely on a Pro Number sticker on a crate alone is IMO unprofessional and asking for lost freight...

my opinion only,
Jay

Right on buddy, motors are done! Backed her in the water and ran both of them, they sound just great! I dont know why but they start faster than they ever have, maybe from all being lighter and bal. Ran her for a good 30 mins they never stalled even after you reved them up and right back to idle! So we pulled her out gave them a big kiss and covererd her up. We (wife&son) are on a week vac in are house in north wisc! But when we get home she is turn key ready to go!!! YES YES YES!!! Well thank you again Jay you have become a good freind! :D:D

Matt p.s. thank you for the shirts and hats and stickers!

I feel your pain, brother. I am running a v-8 E-rude with sky high exhaust ports. It would take forever for my 21 Eliminator to plane with any more than 1 guy in it. But it would fly once it got on plane.

Well looks like Jays mods helped the bottom end out some!!! We all know when the ports get rasied to the moon there is only so much you can do to get bottom end back, with out going to race fuel and super hot heads. Thank you so much Jay!!! :) :) Now after alittle more break in time lets see how hard they can spin some 15X32s!!! :) :)

I just have a few questions.
Are you spinning the props in or out. How high are the prop shafts. What size props.

I have a 28 Skater with the same motors you had (15'' ros modified ) spinning out with 15x32 and 15x34 with the propshaft set at 2 1/8 above on manual cmc 5'' jack plates and it jumps on plane with five people on board.
Sorry your setup did not work but my Diamond motors work great. I wish you the best and happy boating.

I am spinning them out. Running 15X30s and 15X32s. Man i sure wish mine would jump out of the hole. :( :( Now i am going to try 28s the 30s are way way to much. Putting the stock tuners back on and closing the exhaust all the way up to vent prop. Not something i want to be doing but that is about all i can do at this point. Man i am getting sick of messing with these damn motors....... You want to trade motors???

Thank you Matt

When you start to plane do you let the motor or motors rev and slip a litte.
My rh motor will rev to 4 k or so and the lh will tach to around 6 k and the boat rolls right up on plane.
When I first ran this setup I tried to not let the motors tach and props vent a litte and it did take some time to plane. ( my old twin Eliminator did the same.)
What is your prop shaft height and set back.

skydog
08-12-2009, 09:39 AM
5" set back about 2.5" above the bottom. The problem is the motors will not brake the props lose. When they do i am fine with it. You floor it and she just sits at about 3,000 rpm and bog bog bog bog bog for ever!! :(
