Heres the ones Ive located: all 200 hp
96' 3 bad holes and bad crank complete controls prop etc 1800
99' with ss prop, bad forward gears 2000
88 gt one owner 3400
99 on a 20 bass boat for 5000
81 checkmate 21 enchanter, the paint on the motor is grey and sticker is black with red and out line big red gt little white 200 on back of cowl....2500obo for boat and motor
98 Johnson ocean runner, 1 steel and 2 alum props best offer?

Should I eliminate any that are Fichts?
Are there efis that are not fichts?
I need help with year "ranges", good ones to look for.
What is the 2.6?
What is the looper vs crossflow as far as reliability and power.
If I want a quiet motor just look for newer?
I have a 95 boat will the electric plug work?
Is the plug interchangeable over the years?

Which ones would you guys start looking at?

Loopers can have more power and torque, weigh more, and are newer. I like newer, although I'm too cheap to actually buy a newer motor.

Unless you like work, I'd look for a complete engine that works. Get a leak down test done to check the powerhead.

I know its not a 200 but the 91 150s were said to have about 170 hp and those years up to the ficths motors were bout bullet proof.

Get a carb motor,it will cost less in the long run.Parts are plentiful and cheap.Don't you guys go bad mouthin a crossflow either,I ran the snot out of mine and it ran flawlessly.Broke some parts here and there but overall it was a good dependable engine.235 pushed my 20Vegas 80+ in 1988.Used to trim alot of boats with black motors back then. If you want to run OMC make sure you know a good OMC mechanic unless you are one yourself.

David is the 91' not a looper?

What '91? Is it on the Checkmate? That would be your best "deal". Otherwise the 99 sounds like the way to go. You can find a lower on here for under 500 bucks.

Ive found a 91' 200 Evinrude with 85 psi on all 6 cyls. Guy wants it gone. says it idled crappy but it ran great on top. What needs to be done to improve the idle and compression? What is this motor size 2.6,2.7,3.0 ? What is it worth ? He wants me to make an offer.

91 200 is a 3.0 looper, 85 sounds a little low, someone will chime in.
as far as an offer/what its worth, what is the shape of it? Salty motor? hows the lower, trim, etc.? Depending on shape, start low, let him counter...
also, is it near you? shipping cost may offset any "great deal".
keep us posted!

If allof the compression numbers are close,I would'nt worry about it. My 89 225 has 87 lbs in each and runs great .If it is an XP or a GT it will be 225 hp already, if not and it has the small carbs, you just need to bolt on a set of midbores and you have 225hp.The only other thing I did on mine was to update the old 3 wire VRO pump to the new OMS pump. P.S. Hi Joe! I hav'nt installed the 2.7 heads I bought off you last year yet.

Hey Steve, how's it going? 85# of compression is fine if they are all close. You can bring it up if you so desire by plugging the idle reliefs, rings, and tighter heads. Whether it's worth it or not depends on what yuou're using it on and how you're using it.

Going good Joe. The weather has been S**T up here , so I hav'nt had the boat out as much as I would have liked. I'm just starting two weeks holidays, so hopefully that will change. I'm going to get those heads on this fall sometime.Any new projects down there?

Always something interesting going on here:D I've got a pretty unique one on the bench going together. Maybe it'll be done before race season is over.

Right now I've been battling this pig-headed race motor. SOB seems to have a mind of it's own:(

New name for the new VRO type system.

The OMS is the newer replacement oil/fuel pump for the older three wire VRO. Instead of metering the fuel /oil from 100/1 to 150/1 at idle and then to around 50/1 at wot the OMS is around 50/1 idle and 40/1 wot.I
'm only running the motor at 6150rpm right now , sow I still use the pump to mix the oil for me.You can get them on ebay for a few hundred bucks new in the box if you look for awhile.

Where does one find the oms oil pump? Is it an easy install?

HPjunkie

jphii, Thanks for your response. Do you know if the cylinders are steel? Ive heard on this board that you hone the cylinders and put in new rings to fix the compression? do people ever bore them? Are the hot heads to use the 2.7 v-6 heads? What did those come on? What is used to plug the idle relief holes?

I still like the 2.5 150s as far as lasting.

panther150

Yes the cylinders are steel, Joe can advise you on honing. I would say that if there is no cross-hatch pattern left on the cyl walls, then I would hone. The 2.7 heads are the 86/87 200/225 heads. Part#331490. There are two different chamber depths. Joe(jphill) can advise you chamber size. The reliefs can be drilled and tapped or fill with a good exopy resin . Most use epoxy. Marine-tex seems to the be brand most use that I have talked to. I bought a set of these heads off of Joe, but have not installed them yet.The vro/oms pump is on the front left side(looking from the back of the motor) They are easy to install and you can find them new in the box with complete instructions on ebay. The 2.5 Merc is an excellent motor and there are a ton of parts for it out there, but the old loopers runs forever! My two cents anaways.
