Anybody know a good site? Just bought a 97 sea doo xp. Gotta learn what the #*$% I'm doing with this thing now too.

assuming good compression and spark are present. if that xp has the gray tempo fuel lines......fuel lines need replacement, fuel selector needs cleaning, and carbs need to be rebuilt with kits (sbt charges like $35 each for the kits, you need 2. carb base gaskets do not come with the kits, BTW.)
in addition to that, cut 1 inch off the spark plug wires (the resistor boots unscrew from the wires, right handed threads.) then screw the resistor boots back on. firing order doesn't matter,
battery and ground cables are bad about corroding under the crimp. solenoids are bad about not passing enough current to start.
that series of steps resolves running/starting problems on 9 out of 10 seadoo's I work on. the crappy gray tempo fuel lines were used from approximately 1995-2003. they break down from the inside, clog the fuel selector and fuel filter in the carbs.
good luck!

seadoo sux!! i like how they send 2 cycle oil into the center main bearing, when the crank seals fail(quite often) the crankcase fills up w/ injection oil!! nice design, i'm sure the new ones are better, i have one of their pos jet boats here now(i agreed to work on it as a favor, what a mistake!), crankcase full of oil(both engines!!!!), found the oil injection pump ck valves were bad, dumping injection oil into the crankcase and hydrolocking the engines!! talked to the dealers before i troubleshot it, all of them said split the case and change out the crank!!!(multi piece crank) anyway, put a pressure tester on the crankcase w/ 16 psi on it for 3 days and thank god it held pressure:D

Thats what problem this one had. I've owned several ski-doo snowmobiles with the same setup with oil in the center section and never had a problem with them. While I have the engine apart I'm doing a top end to it even tho it only had around 40 hrs on it.
I was tempted to pull my 165hp 800 out of my sled and run it in the ski during the summer.

the center section of the crankcase is basically the oil resevoir that lubes the rotary shaft. if you have one that is hydrolocking the motor due to oil leakage into the mag/pto cylinders the seals on that part of the crank have gone bad. usually this is due to someone allowing the ski to sit with water in the crankcase--it was flipped, towed without blocking the water line, etc and water got in the crankcase. rust, then eating of the seals occurs. if you ever get water in the crankcase/cylinders it's best to get the water out and crank the motor ASAP, just like any other motor.
if you convert to premix remember the rotary shaft as well as the balance shaft in the 787/800 rotaxes still need to be lubed via the 2 big oil lines from the oil tank. either you can loop the lines and fill with 2 stroke oil, or go the easier route and just keep some oil in the oil tank.
my brother and I just picked up a 97XP that the previous owner was disgusted with. he had recently had a rebuilt motor put in, but the other shop didn't do anything to the fuel system. so it never was reliable. we paid a few hundred for it. replaced fuel lines, cleaned the selector, rebuilt carbs, and now it's a reliable pwc.
good luck with it, if you need any help or used parts let me know.

The center seals looked ok but I'm getting new ones put on I'm also putting a new seal on the rotary shaft. The 2 bearings on the pto side were at the questionable stage so I'm replacing those to. I was thinking of looking for an aftermarket head right away but changed my mind. I just want to get this thing running and go from there.
Thanks guys for all your help.

did you guys pressure test the crankcase?? i wouldn't be so quick to condemn the crank seals after seeing this, the final test i did to prove the oil injection fault was i hung a 3 litre merc oil injection tank(the engine mounted one) about 3 ft above the disconnected oil inj pump/lines/nozzles and filled w/ oil, let it sit for a day- oil was leaking out of the oil injection nozzles!! just got a ck valve set in for the oil inj pump, so we'll see, but if the crankcase holds 16 psi air pressure for several days whats the chance of the seals being bad??

The engine was already apart otherwise I would have tried that. I figured that since the crank was out I'd just replace them to be safe. I didn't (and still don't) think that those seals were bad. I wouldn't think that both those seals would go bad at the same time to let oil into both cylinders. I wish the engine wouldn't have been pulled apart when I got it put is was so I guess you can call it preventive maint.

Are you checking pressure and vacuum? I have seen seals in lower units hold up to 16 psi pressure but still leak water but problem shows up under vacuum. I don't know if the same could apply here or not.

I don't know if the same could apply here or not.its a sump that houses oil, usually when they sit the oil fills the crankcase, so i think straight pressure would simulate head pressure(gravity) of oil in the sump, what a pos!!!! they should have used a black engine instead!:p
