Merc gearcase question

Anyone have any experiance with running a non-ratcheting gearcase on a 90mph boat. Have concerns as to how it will make the boat react when chopping of throttle from a high speed. Any remarks???

During the one of the very first races at the Miami Marine Stadium an inboard SK boat seized up at about 90 MPH
It did not have racheting drive and ended up rolling over and killied the driver. After that it became a requirement on those boats to have a racheting drive.
I would certainly not want to drive a fast boat without one.
