View Full Version : Mercury Tech Sport Jet: Bore or resleeve?

Well, I burned up a piston on my 175 XR2 Sport jet. I realized the alarm was on. I tried to make it back to shore. Well I should have shut it down right away. It seized on up on me. I sprinkled a little water on the powerhead and port side of the engine was sizzling. When I pulled it apart, the oil pump gear was wiped out, and the no 1 portside piston has deposited much of itself on the cylinder wall. I got some muratic acid to clean it up and have a look at the sleeve but it already looks pretty bad. The biggest overbore piston I can find is .015" and I don't think that's enough to clean up the bore. I'm not a machinist, but I work at a machine shop that does high performance work so I can get most of the work done for beer.

I'm wondering if I should just resleeve cylinder instead. I'm really leaning toward that because I have a spare blown up powerhead I can pull a piston out of so I'll just have to buy rings, gaskets, and the pump gear. Who should I get the sleeve from? Advanced Sleeve, LA Sleeve? Will I have to deck the block after sleeving? Does the sleeve have to be bored and honed to size after installing? Thanks.

I'm trying to fix this as inexpensively as possible as I'll probably sell the jet boat later this summer and look for something bigger in the fall or winter.

promarine makes oversizes for v6 engines up to .o30, you are probably gonna have to bore the whole engine from what you descibed w/ the temp, you have to check all the other cylinders for out of round/taper, also ck the heads for flatness

AlYes and yes. When the old sleeve is removed the cylinder needs to be measured, in most cases (with THAT much heat built up in the block) it'll have to be bored and an oversized (+1) sleeve will be needed. And, most likely the other sleeves will now be out of round (excessive heat distorts the bore and sleeve plus the piston swells from heat and usually goes out of round attributing to the "egg shaping" of the cylinder). The block will need to be decked after sleeve installation.

At this point there's 2 choices:
a: bore all six and buy new Vertex pistons
b: find a good used block

I think it'd make more sense to pull it down and see what you have before jumping to conclusions. You said the oil pump gear was fried, so we can assume seizure from lack of oil. In many cases 1 oversize and 1 piston is all it takes.

Scatter it, measure it, and then you can make a better decision.;)
